Title: Northwestern 49 Gumball Machine - Restored Post by: RetroMe on September 05, 2010, 07:29:14 pm Thought I would share one of my recent Gumball restoration projects. It's a Northwestern manufactured in 1949. Themed it to very Nice Dr. Pepper. Adding it to my collection.....I'm going to need more room.....

No offense, but I have never understood the concept of making a soda themed gumball machine. What does soda have to do with gumballs? RetroMe - I noticed your avatar is a 1930's DP GFL porcelain sign. Do you own one? I bought one 40 or so years ago for $20 or so - still own it and love it! Maybe he has a Dr Pepper room and by painting it in a Pepper theme it is a way to justify getting it? Title: Re: Northwestern 49 Gumball Machine - Restored Post by: collecture on September 06, 2010, 03:46:17 pm I did not mean my comment in a negative way at all - it is a nice restoration and doesn't look at all like a slapstick job.
I guess it is just the semi-purist in me. If you recall, I have a Standard Coin Changer in a DP theme, which is a fantasy piece. I can make a connection though between the coin changer and soda, but I just can't relate soda and gumballs. I see a lot of them (soda themed gumball machines), so maybe it is just me! No, it's not just you. It looks nice, but I don't get the connection either. Title: Re: Northwestern 49 Gumball Machine - Restored Post by: RetroMe on September 06, 2010, 04:29:57 pm I appreciate the feedback. The Dr. pepper theme was just something I thought would look original and was fun to do. Gumball machines in themselves are pretty boring so adding a collectable theme gives it a Wow-factor. Kids and wife love it.....Next restoration project is for me...Stoner Jr....

Let's see some other pieces in your collection. Title: Re: Northwestern 49 Gumball Machine - Restored Post by: halehouse on September 06, 2010, 07:15:03 pm I appreciate the feedback. That said I did once do a NW49 in a Pepsi theme that sold well and I do have a US Mailbox in the DP Green... Retrome - What other candy machines do you have??? Title: Re: Northwestern 49 Gumball Machine - Restored Post by: Larry on September 07, 2010, 06:56:08 am I think you can make it whatever you want. If you like it, I love it.
Title: Re: Northwestern 49 Gumball Machine - Restored Post by: Kilroy on September 07, 2010, 07:15:15 am i'm a purist, but it does add coolness.
I've seen where too many decals can make it look cheesy, but you did a swell job. i'd proudly display it Title: Re: Northwestern 49 Gumball Machine - Restored Post by: mznb1u on September 07, 2010, 11:03:19 am I agree with the purist's out there but your's looks good and is not overdone. At somepoint I want to get a NW49 and do it up original for dispensing nuts.
