Title: Vendo v63
Post by: smunczen on August 19, 2010, 09:59:41 pm
I'm going to pick a v-63 tomorrow and it'a a later model one with the fake wood on the front can you remove it? This a complete working macine stored inside it's whole life in super shape. I'm going to use it in my garage. Or is it a good idea to leave it alone.

Heat gun will get the woodgrain off.

I have used a heat gun, then taken the remnants of glue off with a good soaking of Goo-Gone, let it sit for 10-15m then get a plastic card and you can get everything.  Typically the surface under the woodgrain is really nice, since the vinyl keeps it protected.

Yep it is easy to remove. Sometimes you are lucky and the paint is red or white but sometimes it is painted drown under the woodgrain so you don't gain much. Look at the back of the door to see what the color of the door will be.

I'm just going to buff and wax it and clean the seals. The guy I got this from bought it 20 years ago in a yard sale. The guy selling it worked for coke and had 2 machines for sale at that time. He knew what he was doing because all the seals had a protective coating on them keeping them from drying out and soft. I set it for 25 cents and got a new door bulb this afternoon. I paid 300 for it not sure if that's too much but I wanted a machine that was in good working order and was a good example of a original machine.

MY USS-96 has the dark wood grain, and I'll admit at first I didn't like it,  but in time it grew on me.  It got that 70's feel (as bad as some of it was)

I remember these machines as a kid so it works for me. I do like the earlier machime better. While I was cleaning it the inside box has the date that steel was made by USS steel corp in 74. I also found the little round sticker next to the data plate saying union made. I love that's it's all American made product and made to last a long time. I'm big into US products. I post some more pic's later today. Cleaning the garage up now.

For $300.00 bucks I think you got a good deal, and it looks great too.

Looks nice! Sure is satisfying grabbing drink out of a machine you cleaned up and got working on your own.

Here's a couple photos of the decals that were on my V44, they weren't in great shape, but the union made one gives you a better idea of what was on the sticker.

I sure was impressed how much the paint cleaned up and how much abuse it can take over time. I hate to see how much it would cost today to make a machine as good as these have been.
