Title: Has anyone painted their Coke machine with Rustoleum spray cans?
Post by: oldcoke on August 17, 2010, 02:31:55 pm
I do not have a spray gun and want to paint this in my basement. Money is tight right now and was wondering if this can be done? I checked Lowe's and they have the red and white with the new pull triger. I have the machine primered with Rustoleum spray can gray. So I need to wet sand and get the paint. I have a C-51. (Red and White)

Sure. Lots of thin layers. Let it dry well and a coat of good wax and it will be ok for indoor use. Won't hold up outside. Painting in confined spaces (basement) is not a good idea. Fumes are bad, the hot water heater pilot light can cause serious problems.

That's how I did this one after primering, but not inside the house. Definitely do it outside or in a better ventilated place than the basement.

I almost forgot about this one. This was done in Rustoleum.

I do all my small wall vending machines with cans. I don't have the equipment to do it any other way. They turn out great but don't expect that professional finish.

Great. They all look good. I will now do the painting outside when it cools down (if it ever does). This is really great news. I really appreciate the feedbacks. Yes, I do have a gas water heater in the basement. My wife did not like me painting there because of the flumes. But it has just been so humid (around 70%) and I know it should be around 50% and the heat here in Western Kentucky has been in the 90's every day. When I primered the machine I had the deumidifyer (sp) going and it got the basement down to a little below 50%. I did get a headach.(sp). I have a big basement and part of it is a garage which I can close off from the reck room where I have the old jukebox etc. Thanks again. Should I try a put Rustoleum clear on the paint when done?  By the way, yes, it will stay indoors.

I used a couple of cans of clear over the paint on that 56 I did....can't hurt!

Mayfield, Ky. About 21 miles South of Paducah, Ky.

I heard that if you put clear over the paint you get a lot of fish eye. Any truth in this? I would hate to mess up a good paint job. I would also be using Rustoleum clear.

Fish eyes are a result of painting over grease, wax or something like that. If you spray the clear after the color and it is compatible paint you won't have any problems. However if you spray the color and you like the way it looks then there is no reason to spray the clear. Clear is mostly just to make it shine. When painting automotive paint that is base/clear the base or color coat is very dull and the shine comes from the clear. When using a spray bomb I don;t see the need to use clear. With that said you can go to an automotive paint stpre and they will mix you auto paint in a spray can. It will be a lot more expensive but the paint will be 100% better. With using rustoleum I have found that their "professional" series paints are best. That is what the blue Pepsi machine I posted was painted with.

Here are a few pictures of the Coke Machine as it is today. I have to sand the back a little more then prime then wet sand the machine then take outside and paint the white first. I painted all the bigger parts outside. As you can see it also needs all new seals around the doors. The Coke machine is in great running condition and over all in really good shape with no rust or dents. All parts where there.

I did not take the paint all the way down to bare metal because there was no need with no rust or dents and just sanded like I would a car and primered, wet sanded and paint. Plenty of prep work. This will be always inside in the reck room. Then I will be getting started on my v-23.

That's the most important thing, the prep work to a good looking job.
