Title: compressor swap
Post by: dw55 on July 23, 2010, 09:21:20 pm
compressor died on my westinghouse and i have a older white-westinghouse refrig that works great .will the frige compressor work ok. they look about the same. neither one has a motor size on it.both are r12. i work on hvac units so i am still learning on the coke machines.i can change it out and charge it if they will swap.i do not want to spend $300-$500 on a machine that is not worth that much.

If you don't know the compressors size(s) (1/5, 1/4 HP, etc.) the best you can do is approximate the cubic feet you are trying to cool between the two units ( you didn't mention what machine you have) but you'll have to take into account that the coke machine has forced-air cooling verses the old 'fridge that probably uses convention cooling & has a smaller evaporator size ( smaller over-all surface area) & when you swap compressors from a used machine , you are installing a "pig-in-a-poke"

thanks for the reply.i havw a westinghouse wb102.compressor tag only has a part no  y-39905  5.3 amps and 9oz r12. i bought a choise vend model 223 tag only has 7.0 amps 8 oz r12  compressors look about the same size but choise vend machine is bigger would that work any better.i would think about buying a new compressor for the westinghouse if i knew what size to get.

You could go with a R12-1/4HP Tecumseh, Copeland or Danfoss...& charge it with R414B/Hotshot or Freeze12, it would be more than enough for the WB102, although it's a tall machine, it doesn't have a really large interior cabinet, I was more concerned that you have a larger chest-style machine,

thanks for the replys, i was looking at a 1/4 on ebay for $140 shipped. i checked at johnstone where i buy the ac units from and they wanted $275 for the compressor and $75 for the fan and that was with my discount.
