Title: 81 Question
Post by: msanborn on July 03, 2010, 01:46:27 pm
Of the 81's a, b or d's, is there any particular model that is more desirable than others and why?  I am asking only about the coke machine's, as I know the differences, but historically didn't know if some people prefer one to the other, because of a mechanical reason, or just personal preference.  Thanks.  M

B's and D's are more popular

B two tone with small coin door

D two tone with large coin door with the option of the mech giving change.

They are about the same as value and desirability.

It Seams To Me ! That Most Want the Large Coin Door Version ?? Don't know Why .I guess it Look More Even & All Of the A Model Versons Were Red & Most Seem To Like the Two Tone White & Red .And The Crome (Stainless Trim ) . But ALL the models of the 81s Seem to be the Most Sought after Machine

I  beg to differ, unless you're a collector who has to  have all four, I think  the average Joe  wouldn't care, or if he/she did, it would be  gee, two tone or solid, and does the Costco carry Orange Crush.

Those who restore and sell have always said the two-toned machines sell best. It doesn't matter much to me personally. Value-wise, I think the D is valued a little higher because of the LD mech.

I personally like the B's because of the small coin door.  I think it looks better.  Plus the embosment is centered more between the bottle door and the right side rather that centered between the left side of the machine to the right side of the machine, if that makes any sense. :Oo:

I was comparing the small door machines.  The A and the B.

It's a matter of personal taste.. I think all the 81's looks great
I love an all red 81a, they look great,
but I also love the 81b or D with the two tone and stainless seperator..
I agree with an earlier comment, that if you are setting out to collect one of all 4 flavors of the VMC models, then a Coke 81D is what you'll want so they all have large doors on them..

I've sold and restored some 81a's for customers who wanted them two toned as well.. so yes, Most customers who want a vintage coke machine for they game room, classic car garage etc.. want the classic two toned, and most of them don't care what model it is. just want it red/white..

an 81 is still just cool machine no matter what color, style or brand in my opionion..
