What would cause a compressor to freeze over?

Maybe the thermostat not working properly and staying open too long?

If you mean the large copper suction line is frosting up, it's typically an overcharged system with too much freon. so  the liquid freon is getting back to the compressor & frosting the line, not a good situation, it can damage the compressor itself, look around for an added on (clamped to a copper tube) service valve, it's a sure sign someones been tinkering...
