Title: Is this worth picking up?
Post by: empinball on May 11, 2010, 10:02:38 pm

came across this at a second hand/junk store today.  I didn't bother asking the guy what he wants for it since I couldn't pick it up today and he's one of those guys who says his price quote is only good at the time of visit.

It has the 7Up logo on back and a very faded non embossed Royal Crown logo on the cap catcher.  The bottle rack rusty but looks complete and I think I saw a power cord out the back but I could be dreaming.

Jeff's book shows it at$875.

That would be sweet with a copper tank  8)  I remember someone did do one with a copper tankand it was          a Pepsi and I thought that was sharp looking.

According to Walters 3rd Edition, the Deep Freeze is rated 4.5 out of 5 on the rarity scale.  Average Condition is $875.00--not sure what that translates into today's soft market.  These were usually painted gray and had a Pepsi cap on the front of the cap catcher that appears to be missing from this unit--you can see the pattern of holes around the faded RC decal where the Pepsi Cap would have been.  If it is complete and you can get a deal, I say snag it but you may have difficulty finding any of the missing parts.  Those are cool little units and believe it or not they can hold 120 bottles--I am assuming the 8 oz type.

In todays market I think a very fair range would be $400-$600 no more.

I have one of those. I have it tore down, and getting ready to restore it. It is a hard one to restore. The inside is filled with asbestas, so if you do get it and restore it, be careful of the insulation inside of the tub. I gave $400.00 for mine. It was complete, but not working. Mine had the Plastic Pepsi medallion on the front. It was a little rough, so I am having it recreated. I think it should be done. If you do get a chance to buy it, don't give over $400.00 for it.

And be DAMN careful with that asbestos!!!  My brother in law died last March from mesothelioma after a long 5 year battle!  He had been exposed to asbestos through some construction products when he worked construction during the summer in college.  While he was lucky to last a lot longer than most people with that form of cancer--it is one hell of a rough road and I would not wish it on my enemies.

If I get it, I'd most likely want to purchase a copy of your reproduction plastic medallion. Any idea of what the cost will be?

Thanks for the heads up on the asbestos, I work in the environmental field and am aware of the health hazards presented by it.  Is it the kind that looks like corrugated cardboard, solid or is it fibrous like Pink insulation?
