Title: Removing moulding on Westinghouse WB-60 Post by: collecture on May 03, 2010, 08:08:45 pm I am going to restore the Westinghouse WB-60 that I recently got into a DP machine. I've got it almost completely broken down, but the trim moulding around the top does not want to remove easily. With my hands I got one side half way up and can see the clip, but the other clip does not want to give up its' grip.
Does anyone have any pointers to give for removing them. I do not want to damage or break them. Title: Re: Removing moulding on Westinghouse WB-60 Post by: johnieG on May 03, 2010, 10:43:52 pm they unbolt from the inside the door liner....don't try to yank them from the front, you'll bend the heck out of the moulding , or ruin teh mounting channel, sometimes if they are loose, you can slide them off to the side.

Not on mine! There is no way to even get to the back as there is a panel spot welded in. The clip I can see just snaps up into a groove on the moulding. I will try to get a picture of it, but here is a pic of the moulding I'm talking about. The kickplate moulding did unscrew from inside the door. It appears to be riveted on or possibly a small S1 head.
Anybody have any insight on what to do to get it unclipped from the moulding? Not sure if it will work on that but I have done that before with small pop rivets.

I could have on the one in the picture, but the other was not giving way and I would not be able to get to the head of that one. None of the rivets are accessible from the rear. I decided to pry (using two long bladed slotted screwdrivers) it off hoping not to damage the moulding much and I did get some minimal damage but it did not break. I think it can be repaired easily. Here are some more detailed pictures - maybe some of you know of a tool I could get to facilitate removal the other two pieces without damage. First picture of the one clip still attached to the machine Second is the other clip still attached to the trim (with pop rivet still attach). It appears the molding was a "one time" installation and not intended for removal... At least not easily! It almost seems like you would have to apply pressure sideways while pulling outward... What ever technique is needed, it doesn't look simple! I agree! I am guessing that prying is the only way, but I'll wait another day or so and see if we have an Einstein among us. I am thinking I can minimize damage by using a nail puller and just pry each rivet out, then use a punch to flatten out the hole again. I did not have any damage to the cabinet and damage to the moulding is minimal - looks worse in the pic than it actually is. It is a thin spring steel clip and I'm sure I can re-shape it and expand the grip for re-installation. If I have to use a larger rivet, I can file off one edge so as not to interfere with the trim seating flush with the cabinet. I have some grand ideas with this one and will post a full set of pics in the gallery when done. What kind of soda machine restoration site is this? :laugh: Well, I guess it is prying time tomorrow? :hopefull: Title: Re: Removing moulding on Westinghouse WB-60 Post by: cdc1960 on May 05, 2010, 10:45:10 pm it's a long shot, but maybe a chat with somebody in the windshield business... it looks a little similar to the clips used to attach the stainless trim on 60's cars... there were several special molding tools used for that work that may help... agian, maybe a longshot...

Good idea Chris - I looked a bit, but I could never associate a pic of the clip that each tool was designed to work with. Tough little buggers they are - only 3 of the 8 clips let go and the rest I had to pry the rivet out. Moulding suffered minor damage - nothing bad! Easy enough to re-shape the clips for re-installation. The machine is completely broken down now. The fun begins! |
