Title: This one stays with me! Vendo 56 (lotsa pics warning)
Post by: Vendo_110 on April 12, 2010, 11:55:25 am
I just picked this up.  Needs a couple of things,  especially a paint job.  How much you think its worth as is?  And how much cash do you think I will have to put into it?  Thanks fellow collectors!

Wow, someone woodgrained a RT. Too funny. Paint maybe just fine under the brown. It has been converted to electric mech. At least 500 to convert it back.

WOW.. did is suppose to be camoflouge or woodgrain.. either way.. strip that sucker down fast.. man it's ugly..
as stated already your missing the coin mech, but looks like the electric set up is still there so if so and want to keep it electric, I think electric coin mechs can be bought for 150-175?
if your converting back to mechanica, then yeah, around 500 or so for that?
Paint cost will depend on who you are having do it for you? I'd budget aroudn 1000-1200 for a good strip down and repaint.

Thanks guys!  He gave me the electric mech, but I want to restore to original.  No glass on the bottle door either.  Is that original??

I paid $600 for it.  Is that a good price?  It cools great and has absolutely zero rust except for the small amount you see on the bottom of the liner.

You did great!! The machine should clean up nicely. That thick layer of paint helped preserve the machine. Terry

I think you did well for $600.00.

The solid door can be changed for a glass one... There are topics about this in the archive.

I know I changed a solid door for a glass door on a 56 about three years ago so have a search round...

Appears to be in excellent condition, especially the condenser compartment as well as the interior!
I did notice several of the louvers are severely bent or broken and the machine has been converted to electric.
Costs associated with acquiring the original coin mech could be costly, but this can be done at a later date too...

600 is a great price. I'd try very hot water first to get the paint off. If it is just latex, that should do the trick. Compressor has been replaced with a later model but that is a good thing. Attached is a picture of the orginal coin mech assembly. Collecture can help you with a replacement. Need to see a pic of the bottom of the bottle stack to see if it is electric or manual. The door can be cut or a skin ordered. Plenty of folks here to help with that project.

If you could please take hi-res pics of the insulation and dupont paint stickers. Mine have been scratched out. Any questions or pics needed just ask. Looks to be a no beltline rust 56, great score!!

Here are the hi-res insulation/dupont paint pics. I also included a hi-res pic of an exterior "Union Made" sticker.  the guy I bought it from said its an oil-based paint.  Any ideas on how to remove?

Oh and a photo of the bottom of bottle stack.

Outstanding pics of the decals, Thanks!!
I'd still start with hot water. If that doesn't work, will need to test mineral spirits or laquer thinner in an out of the way spot. The orginal paint is enamel which can withstand everything but acetone/aircraft stripper.

The bottle stack looks to be electric. Might be able to trade that for a mech. stack. Think some of the parts are reproduced for the mechical.

You're welcome.  Gonna try and reproduce?

I am assuming that the door liner has been replaced since it was changed to an electric vend?  So youre saying I would have to replace the inner door panel?  Also, I am assuming along with a LD coin mech I would need the door lever that connects to the bottle stack as well as the crank handle.  Anything else I am missin?

Just tried hot water with zero luck on that oil paint.  I guess next mildest step is mineral spirits?

Thanks Jim,

I am hoping the louvers can be straightened an welded back into place.  Since this will be my showpiece I want it done right!

Hey creighton,  Can you move this to the restoration section?  I think it would be better off there since I am going to be restoring this thing myself and will have a ton of questions.  Pretty please?!

Your door liner is original, and I would be that you'd find that the linkage that would connect the mech to the bottle stack is behind there somewhere. You'll find it when you take off the door liner.

I'm afraid on the v56 the linkage is on the outside if the liner unlike the V81. You will have to look for the limkage although it may be reproduced. You did well on the price but if you are going to do it right you might as well buy a restored mech from Creighton. You will spend a good amount making it complete.

Yes, the crank handles are reproduced and sold by a couple of different sources.

Thanks Brian!

I just tried mineral spirits on it and the paint just laughed at me.  It did clean the spot nicely where I used it, lol, but it didnt take any off.

I am running out of choices.  What about sanding? Like with a really fine grit??  way off base?

Title: Re: This one stays with me! Vendo 56 (lotsa pics warning)
Post by: SIGNGUY on April 14, 2010, 12:04:59 pm
I would think Sanding would give you some problems... but maybe lightly jsut to the point where you can see the red, then use more another chemical ,or even if you could get most of the red exposed, try some rubbing compound on a buffer?  not sure.

worse case scenario, stripp it all down chemical or sandblast.. and start over..

Good luck!

you may have some success with a chemical stripper, given that the paint layers are of different age, and different application methods... on an inconspicuous spot try a little stripper to soften the top layer, but not the original paint... with a plastic scraper, try removing the top layer after a few seconds... some experimentation with length of time will be required... like SIGNGUY says, you may just have to strip it completely, but this method may be worth a shot first...

So I tried stripping it and too much red paint started coming along with it, so I am going to get it sandblasted.  The guy doing the work said he can powder coat the machine for me.  He said it is a non bake powder coating.  Anyone have any experience with this???

Here are a few pics showing my 1st day of disassembing this bad boy.  5 hours worth of work lol! I know,, I am new at this!

Thanks Eric,  I originally was going to powder coat but I found a guy recommended by a friend and chose him instead.  It was fate!  The guy's wife is a hardcore Coke collector so he was pumped to do this job.  He was very thorough.  The machine had zero dents, waves, pits, etc.  Its like brand new!
