Title: My latest Popperette Project
Post by: BrianB on March 26, 2010, 06:19:34 pm
I have always been interested in machining as a hobby but have never had access to the equipment or anybody to give me any pointers. That all changed about a year ago. At work we have an OLD tool room lathe and a couple of smaller-tabletop vertical mills. After doing some heavy reading and consulting with our division machinist I started trying my hand at turning metal and machining. I spent a lot of time practicing and learning the tools and the setup and measuring involved.

My first project I decided to try my hand at was reproducing the Popperette Oil Pump. I took me a while to get my process down but it was worth the wait! I installed it last night in my machine and it works like a champ! Here are a few pic's.

Very cool!!  Did you use a stainless ball bearing inside?

Everything is Stainless 303 except for a couple of pins and a coupling, they are brass like the originals.

Great work there Brian. Machining is a great asset. I'm a machinist by trade and a person doesn't really realize what all is involved and how invaluable measurements can be/are.

Good for you

Wish I had access to machinery like that!

I wish I had a shop like the guy in the video, wow! Pretty soon here I'm going to be getting my hands on my own lathe and mill for my own set-up at home, I can't wait!

That looks great! I love this kind of stuff. There is nothing like building your own parts like that. I used to do a lot of that in high school even went to a competition and won 1st place at state. Really really fun stuff.

My grandfather was a master machinist and had his own shop.  Man, if I was into machines 25 years ago like today, I would be keeping him busy.
