Title: Vendo 63 cooling question - Need to replace thermostat????
Post by: jenkine on March 04, 2010, 09:43:38 am
I just got a Vendo 63 about 1 week ago.  The unit seems to cool fine and looks like it may have the original contact type thermostat (you adjust it with a flat head screwdriver and the probe is clamped on metal next to the coil in the cooling box).  I can crank the thermostat down some and I have gotten the temp down to 30 but then I go back and check it say 8 hrs later and it is sitting on 40.  Do you think the thermostat needs to be changed or should I first check the probe and make sure it is making good contact with the metal?

Also, if I change the t stat, should I put a contact or non-contact type in the unit?

Thanks very much.

Is the compressor cycling?
The temp will vary by as much as 8 degrees between the cut-in and cut-out of the T-stat.
First thing I usually do with a machine I plan on using is replace the wiring harness, T-stat and both fans. I also clean the coils and repair any rust through pinholes under the evaporator - POR15 is good for this. If you will be using the cooler on a daily bassis, I strongly recommend doing this. The machine will run more efficiently and provide years of uninterrupted use. All parts are available through sponsors of the site.

The compressor is cycling.  Perhaps I am checking the temp and it is on its low point when the compressor has been running a little bit.  I do know I have checked it multiple times when the compressor is not running and it hovers between 38 and 40.

Should I use a contact or non-contact type thermostat or does it matter??  I was going to purchase from Funtronics and they have both.

Here is a machine pic.....

Nice machine!
I have found the non-contact to be more reliable - just position it so it does not touch metal during use.

Good deal.  Do you happen to know if soldering is required in installing this thermostat?

Nope, shouldn't be any soldering.  The stat has two wires running to the back of it from the wiring harness.  The back may have a removable cover.
