Title: 7up clock does not run
Post by: scalebowler on January 24, 2010, 05:41:55 pm
Well I finally found a clock that I really wanted. It is one of those light up 7up clocks with the message board on the top where you put those plastic letters with the pins in the back. Well I got it home and it turns out that the clock mechanism does not work. Anyone know what might be wrong or know where to get a working one/have one that they would like to sell to me? I really want to get this working again.

Thanks

I took the mechanism out and hooked it up to some power and it hums but I am not sure if it turns or now. It only has a minute hand and an hour hand. Got it going on a test run right now. I think it may have been a bad connection in one of the wire nuts.

If you have the clock mech out, you can also remove the back cover and carefully work the movement to ensure everything is free. Then attempt to temporarily energize the mech and check for steady movement. Once confirmed the mech is functioning/rotating, re-assemble the clock and verify time keeping accuracy...

I will post some pics in about a half an hour. I took the mech appart and put it back together and everything ran. Then I wired it back up and put it on the wall and it did not work. I think there might be a connection problem in the wire nuts hooking the clock motor up to the power.

I don't have any pictures right because it is all taken appart right now but this is the same clock that I have. Everything works except the clock mechanism. It hums and I had it appart and the little gear that was hooked to the motor ran great but once I hooked it back up it did not work. Just turned into a lighted sign with a clock face. http://cgi.ebay.com/7-Up-Clock-Light-Menu-Sign-Board-14-W-x-26-H_W0QQitemZ300077238340QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item45ddff4844

Ok the mechanism works when I put the wires into the outlet but not when I wire it up in the clock.

That's strange. Could just get a battery unit from the local craft store. Used one in a 1910 mantle clock and works fine.

Yeah but I would like to keep the hands that the clock has now.

Could it be a faulty power cord?

Ok after 5 hours of messing around with it I finally got tired of it messing up so I unbolted the gear box cover and with the motor running and got the gears to mesh together and now everything is working great. It has been working for a few hours now and has been keeping time very well. Here are some pictures.

The big box office supply stores  may have the letters ( Staples, Office Max, Office Depot) You may also find them at restaurant supply stores

Nice clock!  I think Staples or Office Max will be your best bet for the letters.

What's the tripod for?  Are you studying astronomy or the girls in the dorm next door?

Sorry...since my computer got boogered up I wasn't able to post a response to tell you that gravity may have been your enemy.  The gears were meshing together when the mech. was on its back, but you hang it on the wall and then one of the gears would fall just enough to disengage with the rest of the gears from wear or misalignment.  But glad to see that you toyed with it long enough to mess the gears back together and got it working.   I had a clock that did the same thing way back when.

You know it did that a lot. It worked when I had it standing up but the second I layed it down and then put it back up it would not work. Also oiling it did help. My roommate was messing with it and noticed that the parts that controll the hands were kind of hard to turn.

The Dr. Pepper cup is a spare from a Dr. Pepper Menu Board I got from the old cafe in town when it closed (same place I got the booths)  I thought it looked good there.  I wish I could find a 7up one.

Check out what I did with some bottle caps I had. Just took a paper clip and bent it and taped it to the back of the caps and put it in the slots. I think it looks pretty cool.
