Title: I have a question for the experts on the site.
Post by: Cokemachinesandmore on November 18, 2009, 08:38:15 pm
Did anyone see the VMC 81 Dr Pepper for sale on ebay?  I have a question for the experts on the site. All of the Dr Pepper machines I have seen have all had a white bottle stack, but this one is red ?  Can someone explain the difference or why ? thank you

I found it.

http://cgi.ebay.com/DR-PEPPER-MACHINE_W0QQitemZ220511740419QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3357862203

Also two toned and in my opinion, doesnt look to swift on a DP 81

This is just a guess but I bet it was missing it's bottle stack and they found one from a parted out Coke 81 and just didn't bother to paint it.

well he is asking 6800.00 for it.  you would think that for that kind of money he would have at least painted the bottle stack white!

I think he wanted it red. He's trying to tie it in with the red on the dr. pepper logo. you notice he used the red ice cold decal on the bottle door also. not a bad looking machine. to bad no one will see it on e-bay just using "dr pepper machine" on the e-bay title.

He painted it...and the stack screws and the adjustment rods too.

If you look closely it looks like he painted everything on the inside light grey. Its not hammertone but just plain light grey paint. Why would anyone do that?

Looks like the guys did a nice job on the resto.  Not a bad looking machine but I prefer the all green for the DP machines.

And because I'm a smart-alec (at least that is what my Dad used to say!) I have to ask the question:  "I wonder if this was this a "professional" restoration?"   :glare:

Looks like a regular old "restoration" to me. Decent looking machine.

On this one, I can actually agree with Coates, and don't think it would pass the "Professional" standards he has set for "All of us to Follow"...

For 6800.00 dollars in my opinion I would have to say sub standard restoration.

I think the term we will use is "Refurbishment" vs Restoration...

I have Refurbished a machine for a customer.. he wanted to keep the originallity of the machine , yet while making it functional. It was a Vendo 39, so I took it apart, cleaned and buffed the exterior, there was no rust through so didn't have any holes in it.. Cleaned everything really well, polished the drum, and cleaned the smaller parts and at that time, didn't know about powder coating, so hammertoned the smaller stuff to protect it.. reassembled with new insulation, new gaskets, new wiring, but everything else was original, just cleaned well.. it looked great, and was fully functional...

I may be going to Canton soon and if I do, I will look at the VMC and report back.

Excuse my ignorance here but is a Doctor Pepper VMC 81 just a generic machine with a DP Sign plonked on it...

If so, apart from the historical context would it not be easier to buy a generic one and stick the sign on...

Basically the same price unrestored regardless whether it has a sign on it or not

Okay now I understand... So a Coke 81 is cheaper to buy than a generic one??

Nice machine, but NOT a fan of the two-tone in the Dr Pepper!

There was a Dr Pepper on the Sacramento CL listed on here a few weeks ago for $2500...not sure if it sold or not.
