Title: Vendo 81 medallion
Post by: vendo81d on June 02, 2015, 11:07:26 am
I am currently restoring a Vendo 81B.  The paint and lettering was pretty well gone from the "Have a Coke" bottle door medallion.  I would like to reuse it if possible because the plastic is in great shape with no scratches or cracking.  I cleaned it up using toothpaste and got all of the old paint off.  My question is, does anyone know how Vendo applied the silver to the medallion for the "Have a Coke" and the circle around the perimeter?  I remember several years ago that Jeff Walters made a reproduction that was not painted.  I also remember that Home Arcade bought several of them and got someone to apply the silver and it looked just like the original.  Unfortunately, Coke shut Jeff down and the reproduction that Fun-Tronics sells is only silk screened and doesn't look anywhere as nice.

Spray the inside with silver paint. When dry, wipe inside 'circles' with thinner to remove paint (silver will remain in place filling the letters). Then paint white.

I don't want to use silver paint.  I did one that way year ago and I didn't like the way it looked.  Silver paint really looks more gray than silver.

I haven't tried it but you may be able to use the silver leaf sheets from a hobby store. They are used to apply silver/gold finish to picture frames and such. Would be tedious project. Then paint.
