O.k., so you know that every single day I read all of your posts and wish I were you guys finding all those fun machines for dirt cheap. I just knew that it would never happen to me.

Well, I just stumbled onto a little luck.

Now granted, I am jumping the gun here because I haven't even seen it yet, but I am still happy.

A guy that does odd jobs for me from time to time came by my house today and when he saw my V-216MD in the house, he said, "Hey look at that. My roomate has a pop machine that we had in our kitchen for awhile but it has that ugly woodgrain sticker look on it, so I finally talked him into getting it out of the house into storage."

Figuring it was just an ugly early 1980s can machine with big buttons, I pried further.

I said, "Huh, about that machine, do cans drop down or does it have a glass door that you open and pull out a bottle?"

He said, "Oh it has the glass door and we kept beer bottles in it. It works well, it's in good shape and is nice, for a machine, I just didn't like having one in the house."

He said that he couldn't remember if it was Coke or Pepsi.

Knowing that the machine annoyed him, I asked him if they ever wanted to get rid of it. His eyes lit up with glee and he immediately whipped out his cell phone and called his roomate. I walked away to give him some privacy.

When I came back a minute later, he said, "Yup, he's willing to sell it. Just make an offer."

That is when I about gave up. I figured they'd use it as a chance to try to make big bucks (which I do not have). I said that I haven't seen it yet and have no idea what they are hoping for. He then cut me off mid-sentence and said, "How about $50?" He'd go for that and then I can finally have space to park my car in the garage again!"

Well I just about fell over. I pretended to be somewhat interested and arranged to come see it in a few days.

Now, granted it's not a fancy roundtop or even an all red square corner, (being that it has the ugly woodgain decal), but to get a glass door machine in good condition for $50! Heck, I spend $50 on socks at Target! Besides, someday I'll remove the woodgrain and paint it red or blue.

I can't wait to see it. If it is Pepsi I'll fix it up and sell it. If it's Coke, I'll just have to wait and see if I want to keep it or sell it.

I know it's not the greatest find here, but I thought I'd never stumble across a working machine for $50 that is less than a mile from me (so no shipping).

I'm smiling all day today. '<img'>

Great story 'kito!  I have a Vendo 63 with the woodgrain front that I am refinishing red.  I thought about keeping it original, but I think the red is more popular. I plan on keeping it for a while.  I had it ten years with the woodgrain.

Mark,

That goes to show you that you never know where a machine is going to pop out from... '<img'>

Lets start a guessing game and see who wins. I'll bet it is a Cavalier USS-64. I have a 1972 and love it.

Thanks guys.
I can't see it until Monday morning. I hope to post a few photos then.
It's going to be a long weekend, which under other circumstances would be a good thing.

Thanks guys.
Who knows, maybe it will be a total ugly piece of junk (you never know), but for $50, I'm excited either way.

Kito, I guess you weren't a member a while back when we had a post going, describing this same scenareo but the S.O.B. sold it a day or an hour before we got there.
You really should try and  connect with the guy before he has too much time to think. If he starts talking to other people about it this weekend, it can only hurt the deal.
Anyway, the number of responses to this post proves one thing. While we all enjoy the satistfaction of restoring an old machine, or the aspect of making a nice profit...... the biggest thrill in this hobby is the "FIND".

I agree the FIND is the best.... making money on a machine you didn't really
want or that is too far gone is great.... Also knowing the parts you're selling
will revive someone elses piece of history is great too....But when you walk in
not knowing what to expect and there sets a machine better than you could imagine.
Now that's cool!

And MoonDawg is right if it's across town find an hour and get over there
this weekend... They could think it over or worse pull it out of the garage knowing you're
gonna be coming in a few days and someone else will drive by, see it and stop to offer something for it......  Not trying to scare you... Just talking from experience:(

Thanks so much for your interest guys.
Unfortunately here's what happened (and it's not what you think):
So he had given me his phone number on a slip of paper when we first talked about his machine a few days ago.
Than Monday morning came and I couldn't find the slip of paper anywhere! I tore my whole house up and couldn't find it. I also couldn't remember his last name, so I couldn't call him.
It was SO frustrating!
So the whole day went by and I never got to see the machine and I felt awful that he probably wasted a bunch of his time waiting for me and I never showed.
Then, this morning I found the slip of paper stuck in my drivers seat in my car!
So I called him and left him a long message. Hopefully I can go see it soon.
I'll let you know what happens.

So here I had to wait all weekend and even then I couldn't go see it. '<img'>

But Today (Tuesday) I did finally make the 9.5 hour ':p' (roundtrip) drive to Iowa to pick up the V-56 I bought on eBay a while back. I will start a separate thread on that tomorrow (Wednesday).
Thanks all, take care.

Hi `Kito,
I think you should tatoo the number on your hand for the next time. So you can`t loose it.

Good point. Yeah, immediately after finding it, I entered it into my Palm Pilot and sync'd it with my computer.
