Title: R1 coolerette
Post by: audiobeer on May 06, 2004, 09:02:26 pm
I am in the final phase of restoring the R1. The cooling will be back in a few days and I'm shooting the paint no later than next weekend. Here's my problem.....The door has a locking mechanism that I feel is not original. This will be so clean a restoration that I don't want it anything less than perfect. Does anyone have a closeup pic of the lock and latch? ???

I can check to see if I have a manual and then post the parts diagram if I have it...
I'll have to check tomorrow though...

Thanks anyway Jim. I gave up an went ahead and brazed the previous latch holes. On the door I had to stitch that opening for the lock cylinder since it's been butchered over the years. All I'm waiting on now is for the Lock cylinder to come in and then finish the door. Everything else is done. I'll send pics in a week or so of the completed project.

Jim, I was going to try to post 2 small images of the almost completed R1. How do I do that? I have the Westinghouse script I wanted to get chromed. Anyone have a source to recommend?

Click on the "Add Reply" image link; don't utilize the Quick Post that's at the bottom of the page to reply because it doesn't have the "Browse" Button to include an attachment (image file).

Once you're on the regular Reply Page, you'll see the File Attachment Section at the bottom with the Browse Button to the right for including an image file...

I also did check to see if I had any info/manual on the R-1, but no luck...

Here's a pic. It's almost done. Need to chrome the Westinghouse script and hang the door with a Coca-Cola decal possibly.

Ahhhh what the heck. It's a R1 coolerette. Kind of boring. If it ever becomes truly collectible the next person can paint it white. I guess it's kind of like the 72 cavalier painted white. Definitely collectible and looked good, Yet folks two tone those. Still waiting on a lock cylinder!

I finally got a copy of the machine manual. The lock mechanism suprisingly enough is the same as on the older glove box doors. The ones that can be locked or if unlocked you just push a button. The gap caused by the door gasket is about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch. The striker and latch connection is completely hidden under the behind the door in the gap created bt the gasket. Now to get a lock!
