I'm starting to tear down a Cav 51 for restoration.  It has a 3/4" spacer made out of plywood in between the main door and the bottle door.  Any ideas as to why this was put there?

Hi Lulu,
I have had a couple of 51's, but don't remember that feature. Can you post a pic?

Hi Lulu,
It may have been used for support at the door hinge perhaps. Not much sheet metal where the springed hinge attaches to the body. Mine had some stress cracks in that area at the screw/rivet holes and I had to doctor them up some. 3/4" is pretty big chunk of wood......isn't suppost to be there. Good luck with the 51.

Sorry it took so long.  It's actually 1" thick.  Here's a picture

That looks like a thermal break not plywood. It is used to insulate the cold compartment from temperature transfer.

I can help.  My c51 has a space bar also.  It was a converted Pepsi machine.  Pepsi used bottles that were 1 inch longer then the 6 1/2 oz Coke bottles,  The extra 1 inch allows for the longer Pepsi bottles.  You will also have a slightly different main door liner.  This too was offset by 1 inch to accomadate the longer bottles.  My spacer was made out of aluminum. I converted my c51 back to Coke and got rid of the spacer.  Let me know if you have any other questions on it.  I have the pictures as well.

Thanks everyone.  Brian, my machine was a Pepsi conversion, too!  I don't see anything different with the door liner, tho.  I'll post some pictures when I get it done.

That is some very good information for future C-51'ers, Brian. I Would have never "thunk" it. I am green and you are an Oak.  ':drinkers:'

Brian,
I am not quite following this conversion. If the bottle chute was extended by one inch, then how would that accomodate a taller bottle. Wouldn't just the door liner be recessed by one inch and the bottle chute normal? Was the coin mech shaft different as well?
Just curious!
