Title: DrPepper progress cooler
Post by: johnieG on April 06, 2011, 05:30:49 pm
Just thought I'd share some pic's of my redone Progress Dr. Pepper cooler. I just got it back from the pin-striper & now I have to install the new liner & the new lid/top liner, polish up the aluminum corner guards & lid handle along with the drain/stopper assembly, and then finally either replace or refab a new lid-bale

Thanks, I got the code from Pat Pixley, it's the same shade as his DR.Pepper Cornelius compact 50  it's a Urethane enamel, not Clear-coat, Ijust have to finish the bits & Pieces mentioned above...

Thanks again, the script was hand painted by a local pin-striper , but don't let the "E" at the end of the tail logo "Good For Life" fool your eyes, it's just a touch of camera flash ( looks like it is over painted white inside the top Line of the capital "E")

Thats is sharp.. Question if you don't mind.. how hard is it to take these buggers apart? I guess I thought they where welded closed? and I've had inquiries to restore some for people, but have never done so? just wondering if they are a bear to get open and old insulation out etc?
Thanks
Looks great!

John

Excellent question John. I have two coke coolers in need of work,  but keep pushing them back on the restore list

Very nice work, Johnie!

I would be curious to know how hard those are to take apart as well!

The inner liner is crimped onto the outer shell. you have to get under the edge were the rolled edge of the outer shell meets the crimped edge & run along the length with a chisel or similar tool, to reseat it, you need a roller seam ( looks like a big hand-turned can opener, but with smooth rollers)

Cool, thanks for the diagram,, doesn't look as bad as I thought. SO is it just insulation on the inside? I had always worried it was packed in there with tar like on so many of the coolers and fountains I've taken apart... Looks pretty simple. .may have to take on a few cooler projects...

Thanks very much for the info!

Yes thanks Johnnie,
What do you do about the drain tube when removing the liner? Aren't they soldered to the liner?

They have Insulation is along the sides & some have fiberboard/celutex style insulation on the bottom, on mine, the drain tube was just has a retaining nut on the outside & a thin rubber gasket on the inside. but if the nut is corroded onto the drains shaft, it's quite east to snap the dang tube in half. or it will spin & not let go of the nut, earlier models had drain tubes made of cast-aluminum, so easy does it, ( later models had machined aluminum drains)  some drain tubes are steel & you can get a pair of vice-grip pliers on the inside edge to keep the tube from spinning while the nut it removed on the outside of the cooler.
