Title: Ideal 35
Post by: collecture on November 21, 2010, 08:31:39 pm
Picked up this machine today. It has been on the local CL for a couple of months. I had called when it was first listed and talked to the seller and told him what I would pay. He has had it listed for $850, but called me last Monday saying come get it for my price.
I am fairly certain it was repainted at some point (in the 60's sometime probably). The guy said his dad got it in the early 70's in San Jose and that it is exactly how he got it. It still has a decal saying "For Service, call the San Jose Bottling Co."

Nice little machine...no real rust anywhere...one small dent on the top left back...cools but condenser fan needs replacing...ID tag missing...coin entry bezel broken and mostly missing; however, the coin return plunger is there....coin retrun cup broken at the bezel too. And a cool little Squirt sign attached to the front.

All-in-all it is a nice machine that needs some TLC. I think it looks great the way it is and has a lot of character.

Can anyone tell if the cap catcher is correct? It looks just like my Glasco 50 except no flanged edges.

Also if anyone has a coin entry bezel laying around, I'd be interested. It doesn't have to be perfect...broken is OK as long as functionality is there. Thanks!

very nice score. Lots of cool stuff on CL but many are over priced. Set your price and let them come to you. If they really want to sell it, they will entertain your offer. Congrats on the new purchase!

Nice machine, I have one very similar.  The cap catcher looks right, there is a spacer that fits between the machine and the catcher, I can't tell if this is there or not.

Here is what I'm referring to-

Thanks everyone! I have been looking for a 35 for several years, but this is the first local machine that has popped up. Happy I was able to get it for a reasonable price.

Lock bezel has a 35 on the left and a 2 on the right.
ACE lock. Anyone have a key or can clarify what number I should look for (i.e. 352 or the #2 lock for a 35)
Thanks!

You might be able to find the key core number on the inside of the lock, I've seen some ACE locks have their number marked on the inside of the key core, so you would have to pull the lock out to check. Great looking machine though, congrats!

Nice find Tom! You were fortunate to find it complete. Here's a pic of a nos Squirt sign that I picked up this summer, not green though. Was your's painted or does it look original?

It did not appear altered, but I have not looked at it too close. I'll check it out more closely later.

I like them more and more as I get older because they are easy to move around, Both of my WD-5s are on wheels as well as my Westinghouse and Vendo Juniors. This Ideal 35 has wheels too.

My cooler is a different animal from Eric's, but similar in size. The Quikolds (36x22x18) have a slightly smaller footprint than the Ideal 35 (44x30x20) and 8" shorter - according to Walter's Book. I'd like to find a Quikold some day - DP would be great, but I'll take any of them.
