Title: Almost done
Post by: boss on November 26, 2013, 02:44:06 pm
I've got the trim pieces out being chromed and a little snafu with the coin mech to work out, but I'm almost done restoring my Dr. Pepper USS-8-64k.

That's impressive. I like what you did with the coin door. Is the "I'm a Pepper" at the bottom a decal? Did you have to have someone make the plexiglass
insert for the lighted marquee?

Thanks!  The plexi was original to the machine. The "I'm a Pepper" panel AND the coin door are decals. I originally had them painted but wasn't happy with how they came out.

When you say the coin door is a decal, do you mean the whole solid color maroon covering the lower ~2/3 of the coin door is a decal?

Yes. The whole coin door is covered with a decal.

Sort of like the original woodgrain contact paper, but in solid maroon. Highly effective -from looking at it I just assumed it was painted.

How was the "I'm a Pepper" decal made?

Sorry for all the rapid fire questions, but I'm hoping to have a machine again sometime in the future, though it's not looking so near these days. I'm expecting it might need some detailing at some point, and a bit of insight on decal production or (reproduction) would be very helpful.

The "I'm a Pepper" decal was made the same way as the coin door decal.  It actually covers the entire lower panel.  It was printed out with the wording already on it.

No problem on the questions.  I make custom action figures and have a printing contact for decals (Superman's chest emblem, etc) that I use from time to time.  I emailed him a while back to see if he could make something bigger.  I just told him the size I wanted and paypal'ed him some $ and he took care of it.  One DP logo on the side is original and one on the other side is a reproduction he printed.  He also said he could make the acrylic panel, but I didn't need one since the original was in good shape.

If you ever need his contact information, just shoot me a PM and I'll send it to you.

I just checked and he's cool with doing decals for others. If anyone is interested in contacting him, send me a PM and I'll get you his email.

That's cool, thanks for offering. :)

How did you position and level out the decal on the side? This is one thing I've never understood about detailing, how to properly apply decals so that they are straight, level, and properly aligned.
