I was thinking that the 7up was WAY too high, but Im not in the loop as many here are, simply because of where I live.
WHat do you all think that these machines should sell for???

I sold a customer a 7up and an RC cola 81, both Originals restored about two years ago and offered him $23K for them back and he said no, so is it too much?

John (sign Guy) restored a 7up machine for someone that one it at I believe the rich penn auction. I dont remember what it sold for but add the buyers premium plus the resto fee from John.  That machine may be at or over the starting bid on this machine. I just turned down a cash offer of 6k on my original unrestored 7up 81

*****Eric good eye, i went to look at my machine it should have 7 bubbles and the top left hand bubble should have the R in it.

Is that condensation catch system correct for some 81's. My Generic has the system that hangs in the vents. Also  the round linkage plug on the door is missing on both machines.

I'm not saying it is fake, but couldn't he have taken the picture of the inside before it was primered?  Also it looks like bondo chipped from one of the holes that holds the stainless trim! But for that price it must be real.

...and the top left hand bubble should have the R in it.
Can you provide more details on this? Should the R be embossed, painted, etc.?

And uhhh, almost $8K for a Dr. Pepper?  Oo

I think only the square outer over all shape is embossed with the “7UP debossed into that
the bubbles and registered R is painted on... along with the seperation area of the black bars
above and below the 7up red square.

DIdn't the Vendo 44s command high prices back in the day (80's and 90's)? Will the prices fall on the 81's as well? Just wondering.

when and if the prices fall on the 81's I think it will pretty much be the end of the hobby at that time.  the 44's were popular because of their small size and it was easier to find the small bottles for them to vend.  when the small bottles became scarce, people started buying 81's and 72's because of the nostalgic look and the versatility of the adjustable shelves. at least thats how a saw the swing in hobby, others may have a different opinion.

I think you are right about the 44's....I don't think the market will drop on the 81's like it did for the 44's. Too much versatility and the size is right, bottle door with all the selections, door lights up, etc.

I don't see anything in the photos to make me think it's a fake, outside of a few small details I think the restoration (at least in photos) looks pretty good.. but we all know until you see something in person, it's just so hard to tell..
yes your right Eric on the bubbles, they are just painted on and yes he did miss one... but he also did some outlining on his and the orange box.. not that it looks bad, just different.
As far as price... I think he is basing it on Barrett Jackson Pricing... but again guys, how many do you see come up for sale.. and for the right person, this might just be the machine they need and want and hopefully he gets his asking price...

All in all they are beautiful machines... I can't wait to complete mine someday when I have time! glare

You guys are right about the bubbles they are not embossed. I think his asking price is fair, honestly how many do you see for sale? Not many. When I go to restore mine, green and white? Or all white? These were originally all white, I like the green and white but where does originality factor in here?

I like the RC one color and the Pepsi/7up two tone...I think it takes away from being original, but if I have to (get to) look at it everyday, I prefer the two tone

When I did my Pepsi 81 I struggled about color choice.  I ended up going original solid blue.

I do think two tone would sell better because it is flashy.  But on a 7-Up it needs to be all white.

I'm on the fence with this question as well, but I think it all comes down to what is your intent with the restoration down the road...
if it's for yourself, do what you like.. since it is YOURS to do what you want with.. but if your merely doing it for resale, then you gotta look into what is selling more, what do others like...
Personally here is what I like
Coke Red and white, except for the 81a , keep all red like original
Pepsi, I like the solid, but prefer the two toned and that is what I will do mine in
Dr. Pepper VMC , solid green .. not a fan of the two toned in this one.
RC Cola I like the solid yellow as well
7up VMC 81 I prefer the two toned as the solid white is just to plain for me..

My 2 cents

I like to restore them in the original colors unless it's a Cavalier 72 or 96.

hi all,

now then i just cannot make my mind up on all white

or green and white on the 7up 81's............................

..all white?...or maybe green and white?.... difficult....

maybe if  john ships me a two tone 7up over to me in

England & then Moondawg ships me over an all white

7up over to me, Ill put them in the diner side by side

for say a couple of months & then make my mind up..

naturally, whichever one i decide not to keep I will

return back to the states.............................................

fair enough?

such targetted market research is very expensive, but i will,

in this instance be happy to waive my usual consultancy fee

for this valuable data.

kind regards

I look at it this way.......

If Chevy came out with a ONLY RED vette for 64, or if Ford came out with a ONLY BLUE mustang in 65, etc... would a car lover really paint those cars green and black?  Sure they may look nice, but it's not what they are supposed to be.

Would a Vendo 39 look good with a embossed Pepsi logo? Sure... if ya like Pepsi, but it's not true to what the machine is....

A machine is only original once.... but a restored machine should be just that... restored to its natural look.

But that's just my opnion,........... what do I know.....  happydrinkers

Have you posted any larger photos of your 7up? I'd really like to see some bigger pictures, including of the front logo.
