Ok, rust and all, this is what I need to correct first .
I took off all the liners and most of the gaskets. Found lots of rust.

How should I proceed? Started sanding the rust down to smooth surface.

I once had a can of rust converter that sprayed on clear and turned black when rust was neutralized. Cant find it anywhere nor can I find it at Lowes. They have a spray paint that says it prevents rust but it goes on black.

I believe I'll just paint the 2 lids red again and just clean, repaint the lettering and wax the machine body.

Any input would be great guys.

I have bought the rust inhibitor at ace hardware. I have found that lowes spray paint selection is limiting.

At Menards I bought some in a (non-spray) can from RustOleum.  It ended up black and seems to be working pretty well on the spots I put it on my older truck.

My neighbor came over and looked at my Cavalier, asked me why dont I go ahead and waterproof it, take out the cooling system, and make it an ice chest type cooler. Place in a spigot for draining.

Use the cooling unit compartment as storage for the beverages.

Hadnt thought of that. Really dont know if i could do that to it or not. And wouldnt know where to begin.

I never plan on selling it I'm going to use it for mostly the summers and cookouts/holidays.  (I know... never say never).

Maybe this machine is going to be a learning experience for me.
Then I can post progress pics for the message board.

do you realize how many bags of Ice you'd need?  ':O' , besides the neat thing about a dry type cooler is that you can put anything into it 7 not worry about getting it soaked, salad, & you can always install a beer-tap & make a kegger out of it too (that should make 'yer hubby happy,if he's a beer drinker that is!)

I;ll keep it as is, just have the cooling system recharged or upgraded.

I'm pleased with this machine. cant wait to have it up and
running minus the rusted places that need attending.

thats a different story!'<img'>

Jasmine,
If you are sure those lids won't work...I will bid on them, I need them for a WD 20...which is what the seller claims they are off of.

As a side note, check this place for rust inhibtor, this stuff rocks...!

Jasmine -

The company/website that Eric suggested is awesome. I have benn using Eastwood products for about a year now and have only good things to say about them.

Right now the two leading "rust inhibitors" on the market are POR 15 and Rust Encapsulator. Eastwood's product (Rust Encapsulator) has been proven scientifically superior to POR 15 and is available in aerosol as well as a brush on application.

Unlike the rust inhibitors bought at Lowes and local hardware stores, Rust Encapsulator actually chemically bonds with rust and isolates it from everything else. The hardware bought stuff attempts to "convert" the rust into an inert substance but rarely gets it all which leads to covered up rust pockets that will eat the heck out of any reaming good metal.

I've used it, and really like it. Just follow the instructions on the can and you should be good to go!. Hope this helps.

Not that I am promoting the product, but rustbullet usually outperforms por15 in independent tests...so don't overlook it.  I have used both over the years and rustbullet has done better than any other I have ever used.

POR-15 will work on anything. My lids are in about the same condition. I'll just knock the loose stuff off and paint with POR-15,prime and paint.

Just had to watch all 18.

I do plan on using one of the products not sure which one yet.
Any one I guess will do what I need. Thanks for the web sites guys.

I think it's great to hear that different people have had good results with different products.

At least it'll make it easier when it comes to having a selection! Not having to worry about one product that works and the manufacturer finding this out and jacking up the price is a good thing too. Never heard of "Rust Bullet" though, where is it available?

Wayne - I've used it on compressors before with no problems. As always, try to get all of the loose rust and scale off before spraying. I can't speak for all of these products (except the ones I've used) but they work well as a "final" primer coat before painting with gloss black. So instead of spraying the rust killer then spraying a coat of gray primer, just spray the rust killer THEN the topcoat.

my hubby's welding the new metal on for me.
So I can bondo the top of the lids and sand it for the last time I hope.

I'll get the rusted places finished tomorrow,
stripping the paint, prep for repainting the lids.

I have a pic of the wiring , I took the clip off and got a
good look at the stuff behind that cap.
Let me know if anyone sees anything I should be worried about.

May have to send it to Eric (Global Compressor) and let him take care of the cooling unit.
With this katrina stuff, I may have to place my machine on the back burner
Hope to have it done by the first of the year instead of Nov.
