The serial number is 102358   C 41  ... so what does that mean as far as what number it was in the line up of 200 thought to be made?

Title: Re: RC 81 on Ebay... well was...
Post by: cokecolaman on April 02, 2015, 10:28:17 pm
I bid on it and EBay cancelled my bid...

I've been trying to collect serial numbers on RC and 7up 81s, not an easy task and most people don't even respond to you when inquiring. I want to eventually put into a data base. All the numbers I have are above 200 and all end with C41.

That was a tough machine. I understand it was a RC but Glen and I were talking about it while still on auction.

He had a opening bid of $5,000 which means he knew what he had and there was a reserve meaning he wanted more then $5K. Understandable. I would also. Missing a large mech, large door, and the VMC bezel you are looking at $1,200-$1,500 more in just those 3 parts alone. You are never going to find a original yellow coin door and how the rest of the machine looks, straight but a little rough it would have to be restored.

Once you restore a RC unless it's for yourself or even then, everyone is always going to question if it's a true RC.

With that being said I would only invest in a RC if it was a nice original that didn't need to be restored because once you do I think it's worth less.

Joey does that mean more than 200 produced in your opinion

Title: Re: RC 81 on Ebay... well was...
Post by: coke_and_stuff on April 03, 2015, 09:46:54 am
I personally believe more than 200 were made but that's my opinion, as with many others I have talked to.

As far as a restored RC 81 being worth less. Its just like any rare antique item. Whether it be a 71 HEMI cuda, a 1907 Harley Davidson, or a rare Soda Machine. Over restored hurts it in my opinion and a documented correctly restored piece will command strong money. My RC 81 will eventually be restored, as it was painted years ago and done horribly. They were nice enough to even sand and prep the machine for me for the awesome paint job that they applied. I took it apart when I bought it, serviced it, cleaned it up and it makes a nice Garage Machine for the time being.

It sold for $6700 privately. eBay was only used for advertising. I believe a "newbie" member from SMC got it.

Interesting..............then someone paid approximately $6000.00 for an embossed RC 81 door?

I don't think that is too bad if its short 1500 in parts than he paid 8200 for an original rc81, which sounds about right from what I've heard

Mine actually ends with B41... which I have no idea the difference between a B or C 41... any idea?

Does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to the numbers

Title: Re: RC 81 on Ebay... well was...
Post by: Slapshot42 on April 03, 2015, 05:55:56 pm
Serial tags were probably produced in bulk numbers.  When the machine was done a tag was put on.  If there was a pattern it would of been noticed by now??

Here's the rest of the RC story... first buyer didn't show and didn't call... So the seller called me and I ended up buying it!

I would be doubtfull only on a restored RC 81 as to originality. I would bet original door liner = original letters.

I wouldn't question the RC machine it's real, I looked at probably 10 pics of it last night and nothing jumped off at being made up.

The serial number falls right in with the others I have on record. When I get a dozen or so numbers I will post them. There is defenatly a pattern on the RC serial numbers.

I'm not sure Ezra, but I haven't seen anyone stir the pot more than you...I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I really don't understand why you post some of the comments you do. I like this board and 99% of the people here are great and would bend over backwards for other members. I hope this includes you. I would also like to think you just have a different sense of humor that maybe I don't always get...

Title: Re: RC 81 on Ebay... well was...
Post by: BeaYoung on April 04, 2015, 06:21:44 pm
I think it's a pretty common technique used by people who didn't get there first to "poison the well" and put doubt in the seller's mind that perhaps they should not have sold it to the person they chose. They try to undo the deal that was made so they can buy it themselves. I have a pretty solid idea where this all came from and will take appropriate measures when this is all done.

I don't think it's a nice thing to do or the way I would choose to behave but I know it happens! I've learned in life that I can't control the behavior of others so I try to just move past that. Too many positive things in life to dwell on the negative!

is that a threat? You asked a question and received an answer.  if you don't like the answer that's your problem.

"stir the pot" really cokecolaman.....um, or is it answering a question.  But your post is all warm and fuzzy and I think everyone here loved it.

Is choosing not to talk to someone is a threat?  "Threat" seems like such a strong word to me. I think it's just a choice about who I choose to interact with.
Perspective,  Ezra, perspective.  :wow: I don't plan to hire a hitman or anything... LOL!

I don't need to as I have done nothing wrong.  I posted the information I had at the time from a credible source into if the machine was a flip and if so I was going to inquire into price and location.  I was then bombarded with odd/abrasive posts from Jared, Brenda , and cokecolaman

I'm owed an apology from the three of you and I myself will be discussing your behavior/posts with the moderators and owner of this website.

Do people really turn them into smokers? I just spent two hours reasearching a new smoker for the season, popped on here to take a break, and saw the comment. Do they use a picnic cooler to make the offset firebox?

Here we are again, making assumptions, accusations and just plain childish talk about each other ! ! !
Personally, I resent having to waste time reviewing a complete topic start to finish; especially when I am traveling with limited internet access ! ! !

It was all too recently I expressed concerns at the direction SMC members have been treating each other!
While I may not have every detail behind the RC 81, it is apparent things went south between Slapshot and Ezra early on...
I can only ask you keep this forum moving in a positive direction while minimizing personal accusations and sarcasm!
Not meant to be misconstrued as a threat as some might think, but ultimately, it's up to our moderators & me to deal with issues like this!
Fortunately, we have only exercised discretion on one occasion and would rather not repeat for such trivial antics...

Anyone that has a problem with the Discussion Areas or me, do not hesitate to contact me ! ! !
End of Story...

Jared,
I am not pointing fingers; just my observation of the issue...

A perfect example of how things get misconstrued and misinterpreted...
As far as I am concerned, topic is dead!
We lost focus along the way that one of our members acquired a very elusive machine for their collection!
Any future concerns regarding this topic should be directed to me!
