Author Topic: Compressor line broke how to test if working??????  (Read 4101 times)

OK so this is a v-39 compressor looks great the low side line is broken first and its right next to the flare on the comressor and Im not sure if the fitting connected to the compressor screws out or what, So thats a sticking point as to if That can be fixed also Im not sure if its even going to work Its still hooked up the appropriate posts on the compressor( see picture) red( closest) white and black farthest away from picture I plug it in both fans come on and run great compressor hums a little and when I unplug I can hear a click 3 sec after unplugging. the Other owner said they didnt know when the line was broken so It could have been years I have had it for less then 1 year. So My question is there a way to test the compressor( multimeter?) as to if its indeed working It hums a little But not what Im used to(compressors fully charged and working) and if the break could be fixed thanks Adam

Come on people I know you have Ideas and Im not so educated on these subjects....... Eric any Ideas? I really dont care if I have to ditch it and start fresh But I would like to keep it " origional" if I can :-} thanks

Adam,
The line is soldered into the compressor. The trick is the copper to steel weld. Just clean it really good. Use a quality rod, brazing rod, silver solder, or Blockade (a silicone based rod). Lots of flux and get it hot! That's about it. Sorry for not being much help. It's just one of those things that takes practice.

You can use your OHM meter to check for continuity across the motors coils, & help Identify which one is the Common/Run/Start,  the Start coil should have a higher reading than the run coil.  see the highly complicated diagram below  ':<img:'> , however this will only check continuity, & isn't test to see if the compressor will even run, it may be locked-up. or have valve problems, etc.  So first fix the line, recharge, & see if she'll turn over. but don't try it with the line disconected, you'll only suck more air & moisture into the system.  hope it helps!

Hey you 2 thanks for the replies My only problem is the line is broken so close to the flair ( picture) and mangeled how would I even go about splicing in new I cant cut off the ragged on the compressor side really cause Again LOL its so close. and Johnie, yea I dont have any spare r-12 haning around to test it to see even assuming I can fix the Line to shoot into it or have it done.........What a quandry Im debating just buying a r134a compressor But Im not entirely sure how to adjust cappilary tubes for the new compressor as I want to use the old condensor and fan inside the machine......any further thoughts rants etc?  '<img'>
