I had a similiar problem with a Coinco S75-9800B coin mech, it would always take different amounts of change, no rhyme or reason.  It ended up needing an adjustment on one of the coin counting switches.  I made sure that was in spec (you can get most of the manuals for mechs on the downloads page to the right).  It took a little bending of the wire, and there is a visible marking on the back side of the switch that lets you know it's adjusted properly.  I can send you some photos or guide you through the troubleshooting if you think it might be that.

thanks for welcoming me guys... machine runs great!
everything flows smoothly.
Just looking to find out what yr (s) these were made and where I can get parts.
I also have a 1968 vendo 154 which sits on my enclosed porch and also work 100%
I paid 50.00 each for these.... had the 154 for almost a yr now.
