I have to agree with Brian  on this cooler , if the price is right.

I'd be all over that... love coolers.. especially small company brands
That would be killer yellow with the red and deep blue/purple lettering
looks like a standard size.... hows the inside?... looks to be missing a opener and the cap catcher but you could have the catcher made and buy a NEHI off ol' Greedbay
Good Luck...

That is SWEET!!! If the price is right I would get that without even thinking about it. I love RC Cola machines and coolers. The yellow looks so good.

The guy's asking 175 for it . I will see today if he still has it and I will ask the condition . He says the lid isn't origional. I'm not really into coolers but it is a NEHI  .

$175.00? I would have paid that immediately. Excellent find at an excellent price. Good luck.

Grab it! , NEHI is a great off-brand cooler, & once restored, it will fetch more that the same ol' vanillia Coke branded cooler. NEHI is a Classic 40's & 50's flavor with great nostalgic collect-ability.

I'd be all over that for 175... you might even get it for less if that is his asking.. either way, great cooler, will look very cool all restored...

I talk to the guy and if everything goes right I will be picking it up tomorrow  .  That is if he's not reading this .  :tounge: If you guy's have any info to share about this cooler that would be great, I know nothing about these coolers .

Let us know when the cooler is at home and safely in your hands...

That'll be the star of your collection....
Hope there's a tag or decal about the manufacturer... Bet there's not a
hand full of those left out there.

Next time.. When you come across a embossed cooler other than Coke start the Thread like this:
“Hey Look what I  stole for $175!”

Hope you get it.... I can see those edge trim pieces in the dark blue... the drink in dark blue,
the lids & body in RC/Nehi Yello and the NEHI itself in the red with the dark blue highlights.....
That'll be one killer cooler! Best Of Luck!....

You real lucky that the cooler was still around. I ran across two Nesbitt coolers this month cheap and couldn't get either one. I had one person hold one for me and his brother sold it.
You got a great deal.

The guy listed it wrong on Craigslist it was under soda . It's  been on there since Nov. 29th. I'm happy to say I now own it . My brother is picking it up and on his way over.

The non Coke/Pespi stuff is in my opinion  way cooler ( no pun intended)

Awsome find!! Congrates! and I have to agree, non coke coolers are way more cool.

Post by: zadd on December 13, 2008, 05:41:23 pm
Well I have it home safely and let me tell you  the body is perfect with no dent or rust, the liner is pitted but in fair condition . It has the original hinges but the lid was remade out of wood ? The tag says it was made by The Portable Elevator MFG. CO. Bloomington Illinois . I was very impressed with my purchase . I probably won't do anything with this for awhile but if anyone has info on restoring this and color scheme that would be great .

Is it a Pelco koolie 99 ? I was looking at the machine photo's and it looks like one ?

I have a friend who restored that exact cooler. I believe he sold it but I will ask him if he has any pictures of it. It looked beautiful.

Awesome find at a great price!  I'd have been all over that one as well!  Can't wait to see it redone...I love the colors that Eric suggested!!

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: Eric on December 14, 2008, 12:46:03 am
Congrats!.... Go original in restoring something like this... What I suggested I would think would be close.... The lids would be, I bet, close to Westinghouse lids which they repro and may fit...
same as the cap catcher...
Post some close ups of the embossing when you get it....
SWEET SCORE! Way to end the year! :happydrinkers:

Great Score! According to the soda machines section on this site The PELCO Koolie 99 had sliding lids. I would measure the cooler and see if the stainless lids to a later model Quickold or S&S cooler will fit. You should be able to find the lids without too much searching. Looking at the corners and the shape and location of the bottle opener I still think it might be a Pelco koolie 99 ? But confused about the lid and no casters .

Sure looks like it! Casters were often optional, so without would not mean anything.

I'm also leaning toward a Pelco 99.  The plastic pvc piping   is a giveaway sometime in  it's past,  it was doctored to be kept in use, so  the original sliding lids were  prolly replaced  If replacements that fit can't be found, i don't think it would be to much to have new ones created or  to modify  repop parts.
That said,  it looks great, and you got a heckava deal, it won't take much to bring her back to pristine  condition

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: MoonDawg on December 14, 2008, 01:32:47 pm
Prior to this post I had never heard of Pelco, certainly is rare. Although lids
would certainly be easy to fabricate, it's difficult to see from the picture how they
would slide over/under each other?
Looks like someone has used stripper to remove the paint, if you can't get
around to restoring it for a while, it may be wise to primer it or wrap it with plastic
so the rust doesn't get to it first.
When you do get it restored I'm betting Jim is going to ask you for a photo
to replace the one you found in the Soda machines section. Nice find! :happydrinkers:

Yea I will take it to work and spray some acid etch prime on it until I can get to it . The guy said at some point the lid was replaced with wooden one's , not sure about the lid if I would have any luck finding the kind that slide .

I wonder if any of the 60's model Bevco, etc. coolers with sliding lids could be made to work? They are fairly inexpensive still.

maybe a early 1960s quickold with sliding lids? Use the track and get new stainless lids made?

PS I know where one sits for $85.00

Not familiar with the way the lids mount on these . Right now it has a rubber seal and the lid lays recessed on top ? What ever you guy's think would work to put her back to original . The help would be greatly appreciated .  :happydrinkers: I also wanted to ask if anyone has restored one of theses ? I haven't messed with it in fear of going ahead and starting the restoration but it looks to me that you can undo the corners and a few screws here and there and each panel comes off . Like its build around the liner and frame making easy paint work . Like I said if you guy's can help with the lid that would be great I also need a cap catcher and bottle opener , The liner may also need to be replaced the one in it could be use but is badly pitted . I'm sure a metal shop could remake one . Thanks

Post by: collecture on December 14, 2008, 10:12:33 pm
Does it look like there was a sliding top on there at one time?
Or does it look like a Westinghouse Standard or Junior with flip top lids?
Does the lid area look modified?
Post a pic of where the lid meets the liner. Maybe it originally had flip top lids?

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: Eric on December 14, 2008, 11:28:48 pm
The cooler Glen posted for $50....I'd contact and ask them if they could messure the cooler lid area and the lids .... for $50 that would be a deal.... and just see if they'd sell & send the lids.
Or if Joey's contact could measure their lids they may fit..... looking good...you have 2 leads already
on lids also they make a cap cather for the westinghouse cooler if the supports are the same distance that would work and just buy a NEHI star opener from eBay...
Unbelievable condition...
Also a AC guy could bend and break you a new tub.
again awesome find! doubt another one of those show any time soon...
You're gonna be a Nehi collector now :happydrinkers:

The liner and seal look untouched other than some silver spray bomb . The seal goes over the linner and under the body . The lid just lays on top like the Westinghouse standard . It looks like a plain tub , no slide mounts .  I will get picks tonight .

Even if you aquired sliding lids and hardware......proper gasketing may be a problem?
I think that by re-making your wooden lids into metal would get your restoration on track.

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: loman4ec on December 15, 2008, 09:13:19 pm
I agree with Glen. The wood lids look good So I would have them copied in metal and no one would ever know that they were not original. You may even be able to have the wood lids skinned with stainless and use the wood as the core.

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: zadd on December 15, 2008, 10:16:33 pm
What do you guy's think about a new gasket ? Kinda odd it goes over the liner and then creates a ledge and then goes under the outer skin . I think I will just keep the lid the way it is and like you guy's said just have them remake it in stainless . Thanks

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: Eric on December 15, 2008, 11:25:13 pm
Are we even sure they were slider lids... don't know if I've ever seen sliding lids go
across a rubber gasket all I've ever seen is metal sliders in metal tracking/rails or
what ever you call it.... though I haven't seen every type cooler.... But if they did it would have to be a hard rubber gasket a softer gasket would catch.... here's a similar cooler
that has flip lids.. I think someone on the site bought this and may be
able to supply detailed pictures... can't remember who....

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: Eric on December 15, 2008, 11:31:58 pm
Also... the gasket doesn't look like it sets down deep enough for 2 lids to slide over each other
I would think that ledge /lip would have to be an 1 1/2“ - 2“ inches deep for sliding lids.
Im begining to think it's an older flip top model personally.... maybe early 40s?just my opion...
here's a cardboard sign.. again the same era with flip top lids... though it's an artist
rendering it has lids that look like they set down along that edge.

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: Eric on December 16, 2008, 12:10:38 am
Just noticing that the embossed “DRINK” looks the same on the NEHI as on the RC
I posted... but.. maybe that was the standard design/font used for that era logo.

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: collecture on December 16, 2008, 12:21:58 am
I'm in agreement with Eric...looks like it had lids that sat recessed and flush with the top of the sides. Sliding lids would not slide on rubber gaskets.

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: zadd on December 16, 2008, 07:10:03 am
Yea I agree I think it had the same lid style that it currently has . Looking at the seal they fit perfectly just been replaced at some point . The guy told me the he thought the hinges where original . I just got side tracked on the manufacture and thinking it might have had slide lids because of info on a Pelco Koolie . There is no way it did the rubber seal is original and like you said its not a very deep ledge that the lid sets down on . I think I could just take the wooden lids and have some stainless one's made just need to find a similar rubber seal . Thanks guys

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: MoonDawg on December 16, 2008, 02:21:07 pm
In looking at your picture of the broken gasket, I see the lower section as
being pretty close to that of the Ideal slider while the upper part is not gasket
but simple breaker strip which can be painted and re-used.

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: zadd on December 16, 2008, 06:32:04 pm
No breaker strips . Just a solid gasket the lid and outer body set on . I will have to remove the outer panels to remove the gasket .When I get that far on tear down I will post a pick of the gasket removed and go from there . Thanks

Title: Re: NEHI cooler
Post by: Eric on December 16, 2008, 10:52:05 pm
If you get lids made think about using that insulation foam board you
get at LOWES or HOME DEPOT... it's blue 4'X 8' sheet... would be perfect for the
lining and be light weight.... I would be afraid the wood would just absorb moisture
warp and make them heavier.
I bet the handles are original too they look like the ones on the
Orange Squeeze cooler I have.. is there one screw per end?

anyway keep us up to date when you start the restoration.

Leonard,

Do you still have that 7up S&S cooler? If I remember it had sliding lids. Can you take come pic of how the lid works to compare?
