#1 Soda Jerk!

« on: July 22, 2006, 05:00:45 pm »

Hello,

Just passing this on to anyone who may want to follow up and see if it's worth getting...
I received the message below:
Quote
Would anyone be interested in buying a HIRES Rootbeer soda bottle machine  (chest style)?   It has been sitting out in my father's backyard for 25 years?  It has all parts and needs cleaned up.  The sign on front is still readable.  Willing to give it up for nothing, if someone wants to come get it.

Her email contact is: "Beth Howell" <bethhowell@cox.net>

Whoever finds out where it is - please reveal it's location - I doubt it is in the West, but I'll keep my fingers crossed. If not personally interested, I'll at least pick it up and ship or whatever I can do.

I wrote also with no response.
We can find it - she has got an @Cox email address, so it has got to be in either Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas or Virginia. ':p'

Doubt it, though.  :-(

She email back to me. This is what she said:
Quote
I can't get to it to measure, but I am guessing it is 36" X 24"  wide, maybe 4 ft high.  It opens from the top and my husband said it worked and stayed cool  the last time it was plugged in (1980s.)    HIRES is printed on it in blue (I don't believe it is embossed).  Needs rust taken off of it and shined up.  Let us know when you will be in the area again.  I would like someone to have it that will take it and fix it up.

Sounds to me like it is an Ideal 55, since she said it worked in the 80's (even though she did not mention a coin mech). If it was an embossed Quikold,  I would be all over it right now.

I'm trying to figure out how I can justify a trip from Oregon to the San Diego area now even when I'm heading almost that far south in October.

No one told me when I bought my first machine a year ago that these suckers were addicting!  Oh, the thought of a Hires cooler!  Not only would I get a cooler, but a root beer one!  <sigh>

Hhhmm... Quikold standard or a Slider.... either way.... Cool!!!!!
Somebody better grab it! I would think a harder model to find...
It would almost have to be embossed wouldn't it?... Did Hires do
anything not embossed? See if they understand what embossing is...
I would think if it was a sticker or paint they would say the letters were coming off...
Would stink if someone drove all the way for a decaled deep freeze.... '<img'>

She is sending me a picture of the machine tomorrow. If it is worth the 10 hour drive, I'll go get it. According to Walter's 3rd book, Ideal produced unembossed generic machines also...we'll see tomorrow. '<img'>

HIRES is printed on it in blue (I don't believe it is embossed).

An embossed Hires 55 slider has white letters inside a blue circle

Petey,
I am in touch with the woman and am hoping to get a pic of it tonight. I am interested in it, but it all depends on what exactly it is. I was going to try to make a special trip out there if I like it, but if you are available and don't mind picking it up I would appreciate it. I would gladly reimburse you for the gas. I can definately get out there in the next month or so to pick it up if you end up doing this. I'll buy you lunch too.

After a couple of days with no pic or email, I emailed her again. She just responded saying that she already had someone picking it up. Is that you Petey? I hope somebody here got it - you need to post pictures and solve the mystery of what it is.
