Title: Vendo 63 lock mechanism
Post by: on March 08, 2006, 10:33:45 am
Hi,
I'm looking for a missing nut for the lock mechanism on my Vendo 63.  It must have come loose and fallen into the cap catcher and gotten thrown out.   :(

Or would be willing to consider the entire locking mechanism!

Thanks!

You can buy a new nut from a local hardware store (ie. Home Depot, Lowe's Ace) for less than 10 cents. Either figure out what size thread it is or take the whole lock to the hardware store and try different nuts.

Thanks Tom, I already tried at my local Ace Hardware.  It appears that it isn't a common size it needs to be sqaure.  That's why I'm having such a hard time finding it I guess.

What do you mean by square? The nut is square shaped? What size is the thread close to? I have some square shaped nuts. Did you try some of the metric nut sizes. Sorry, I don't own a V63 so I can't check it out for myself.

You can use any shaped nut as long as the thread count is the same. If my memory serves me correct I think it's probably a 1/4" x 32 nut. Lowes/Home Depot will definitely have it.

The shaft is "squared" to allow the round locking cam to be mechanically linked to the shaft. It just gives the impression that since the sides of the shaft where a nut would go is square that it must use a differently configured nut.

Let me assure you, it doesn't. Still, if you have any trouble finding a replacement, let us know!

Hi,
The thread size or count is not a common one. Metric is to fine and SAE is to course.  Some lock manufacturers seemed to have there own thread patten on some of there locks.

Bob, you've hit the nail on the head!!!

I took the lock to the hardware store and we tried about every nut in the store and nothing fits!  And to think the original probably was thrown out with the caps!  Argh!!!!!!  :darn:

Tom, I'm not sure if the original nut was square or not.  I never really looked at it before it was lost.  This complicates things cause I really don't have a visual of what I'm even looking for.

Kevin, if you have one I'd love to buy it from you!!!!

Maybe you could find a "C" clip that size?

I was thinking along those same lines Moondawg, but I was thinking a speed nut like a lot of the fan blades use.

Well, maybe I'll take the lock and parts to Home Depot tomorrow and hope I find someone creative to wait on me!  Thanks for all the good suggestions.

seems like I had a lock this summer should be in the garage somewhere.

Well, my trip to Home Depot was in vain.  They didn have anything that would work.

Since then, I found out that I probably need the locking cam too.   :(   I have a locking cam that Funtronics sent me, but just learned that it is suppose to fit tightly to the shaft (thanks Bob).  So if any of you guys run across any of those pieces, please keep me in mind.

Thanks!!!

How about contacting a local lock smith or even a vending route company in your area...
Discuss things over the phone and then if it sounds like there's a possibility of someone having what you need, stop by with your lock assembly for a perfect match...

Thanks, Jim.  Good idea!  If nothing else pans out, I will definitely give that a try!

I got all excited when I just changed the lock on my buddies v63. It came with a whole new cam and screw, so the old parts are good. I looked back through the thread, and realized it was the newer lock you have. I have the same lock sitting here on my desk, minus the key. I measured the threads, and it is 27tpi :O and just over 1/4" diameter. Definately an odd thread. I've been searching for a key for my lock. You may try looking into a locksmith....
