Alcatraz has been on my list to see for years.  I used to get to SF about 3x a year for work, but never built in any 'free time' for myself.  My boys were all little, needed to get out and back as quick as possible.   I finally decided to stay an extra night, just so I could get out to Alcatraz.   It rained sideways all day so I never had a chance to get out of the hotel.

Soon after that I took a new job and I haven't made it back since.

I think that you need to plan ahead for a visit to the island. Every time we were in SF the trips to Alcatraz were sold out for the day. We did go one time with a Civil War exhibit. We were pretty much handed the keys and went into places that no one gets to go. That was cool!
The Coke cooler was there then.

We booked a month in advance. Always sold out.

We did the night tour this year.. They take you to the medical block. Great atmosphere in the dark. Didn't see the cooler though.

Watched the show last week on the three guys that escaped in 1962 and thought to be dead . The nephew of the two brothers had photos of them in Brazil from 1975 .

Would be a cool place to visit... I always thought they made it ... with all that planning... would think they would have some outside help like a boat out waiting...
amazing escape.. from the prison anyway.. guess we'll never know if they made it for sure.

There are people that make the "Alcatraz swim" every year. I met an older guy that said that the swim wasn't as bad as they make it sound. Called the Alcatraz Triathlon, Folks swim from Alcatraz for 1.5 miles, Then run 1/2 mile and bike for 18 miles.

I am planning on doing the Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim in August 2017.  It is only 1.5 miles but the water can be cold.  I survived a 1.5 mile swim in 54 the degree waters of Lake Huron at the beginning of my Half Iron Triathlon this past September so I think I should be able to handle it.  Actually looking forward to it!
