Hi Guys, got a Cavalier CSS96A, had a Vendo model 97AA2410AA coin mech in it, mech doesnt work so I pulled it and when I took the actual mech off, the (solinoids?, transformers?) (devices that mount behind the mech that has the wires sticking off of them that protrude into the mech to register the coins as they pass thru) have been burnt to the point that they feel apart into powder when touched. Now, the multiple part question, whats the likely culprit to cause this (lightening strike, short in the wiring, old age, ect), where can I get the replacement parts, or who does work on these, do I need to worry about the mech I took off another machine thats currently working on this one?

Heat & old age destroys the insulation on the windings of the coils, plus ozone plays a big part in destroying the plastic coating they use to insulate the wires, so unless there is some sentimentel value to your coinmech, you may as well replaced it. Coinco 9800 A/B series are popular for use in these machines.

You can also just disconnect the CREM's and remove the knockout arms - all they do is prevent the rejector from accepting coins when 1) the machine is empty and 2) there is no change for denominations over the vend price.

4 years or so doing restorations - playing around with them for about 8-10

I am pretty sure Steve Jebb at SJW does them still...his ad banner says so, but he has told me he doesn't do machine restorations anymore yet still touts his restorations on the SJW website...so??

I mentioned to Steve Ebner 5 or so years ago that I'd been messing with rejectors/mechs and enjoyed it and he suggested it would be a nice niche business to get into. I thought about it and started doing it a year or so later. I can't say I could make a living on it, but it makes a little extra income here and there. I really do enjoy it and find it relaxing in a strange twisted way.  :upside:

I should rephrase my earlier response.
If the rest of the mech works, then disconnecting the CREM's won't hurt the basic operation.
I still consider johnnieg the electric mech authority...I don't like electric mech work much.

Thanks Collecture, thats basically what I needed to hear. Id prefer to keep the original mech in there, so Ill remove the coils and put it back. any ideas where I can get new coils

I have a Vendo model 91E93038-3703, not working, that may be good for parts. The CMR's should work OK.  They did until the pay our motor shorted out anyways.
