Title: Paint the inside lid or not your opinions!!!!!
Post by: on August 10, 2004, 02:59:59 pm
OK so Im resoring another machine a westinghouse cooler with the double top lids etc now the whole outside will be repainted lettering etc. One thing is the inside lid( see attached picture) has the embossed coke also part of me wants to Block out/ mask off that portion and just repaint the rest red preserving the " vintage" lettering and US pat office stamp now you will notice its not in perfect shape but with some cleaning it would be ok and I would clearcoat it anyway. Will this hurt the value of the piece( not that I EVER plan on selling it) I just think that keping that origional is kinda neat any opinions on why I should shouldnt why it would or wouldnt hurt the value etc? thanks again.

Let me first say that I am not a professional. I do this just as a hobby so my thoughts might not be accurate. But I think that if you were leaving the whole machine origional I would not touch the lettering, but since you are restoring or at least painting the machine I would do the whole thing. If you are going to take the time and money to do a restoration I would do it right. Again this is just my opinion. But since you never plan on selling the machine who cares what the value of the machine is you should do it how you like.

Paint them...... All that work, time and money...it's
sitting there restored looking better than new condition
just to open the lid and.....oh.....huh.... yeah... nice cooler.
Do it now cause after the outside's done you may not want to
fool with it later... it's just a couple more hours of work... :)

Hey you all Yea I thought about it some more and the main reason of keeping it was just the " Oh look that painted area is origional and people 60 years ago saw the same exact thing" Now I have changed My thinking to " Look at the cooler that people saw 60 years ago" LOL as such Both lids were sanded tonight and primed gotta do a LIL metal work on the one lid( as the picture shows) I will eventually Post a thread of before and afters and inbetween. Gotta love digi cams there FREE picturesand I can save em on a cd and its all just peachy :D  Thanks again for the Thoughts I apreciate it :)
