Title: Is this Asbestos??
Post by: kdog on September 02, 2018, 03:36:39 am
Hi,

In my Coke Vendo 56, the pipe that goes from the compressor area into the fridge area is packed with putty that might be Asbestos based, so I have been told?

 :help:

Should I get a professional abatement service to remove it?

cheers

Asbestos is an airborne contaminant. If it bothers you, or you’re going to do some work on the machine, spray it with water and carefully remove it. Dispose of it properly in a sealed bag.
If you’re not doing anything with it, spray it with clear acrylic paint, thus sealing it.
Chances are it’s not asbestos. Others on here would know.

you are right to be concerned, however IF the putty does contain asbestos filler, it is confined/bonded to the clay base and it is not "Friable" ( able to become to be a fine airborne dust & easily inhaled)  it wont jump up & bite you, but wear gloves & dispose of it properly , also be aware that the fiberglass use to insulate the bottle compartment also presents an inhalation hazard, you should wear a dust/particulate mask & gloves when handling it. long sleeved shirt is also recommended as it is quite itchy if it gets on your skin

also please don't snort or ingest either item
