Sorry.. had to post that though...
40,000 81s.. guess no way of really knowing unless someone stumbles onto old company records.
I would think it would depend on Pepsi and what they ordered... So many companies
making coolers and machines for them... What worked best for the company...coolers.. machines..
Look at RC very few 81s but tons of Kelvinator coolers... that must of been RC's go to company... those seem to
pop up everywhere.
Ideal sliders seems to have been in good with Pepsi and 7up.. to where Dr.Pepper must of been such a small company
or at least didn't put the money into marketing and vending.. very few things embossed in Dr Pepper.
The serial numbers on the machines is anyone's best guess... someone would have to try and collect the serial numbers
and keep a record.. Then when restoring these machines if any tags were pitched due to condition and not thinking
of keeping them... lost history there.

I don't think anyone would classify the Pepsi 81 as a "rare" machine, but perhaps HTF (hard to find)? Rated 4.25 of 5 rare in Walter's Book. Very collectible and very sought after but I don't think you will ever find a true number as to how many.

Man......I thought the 81d was rare. Sounds like we should be stumbling over Pepsi 81
