Title: New find. c-64 c-55 c-96
Post by: loman4ec on January 09, 2006, 06:20:40 pm
Well here are the three machines that I drove 1000 miles to pick up yesterday. The 64 is really nice. It has been painted and the painter did a really good job although he didn't finish the job but I have the paint code and hopefully it will match. The white sides and red have a coke are painted on and not decals. the icside looks like it was hammertone painted but is smoother. It looks really good.

The C-55 is a little rougher than I thought. It is solid and most of the rust is not all the way through. It is all there and I will plug it in tomorrow.

The 96 is just a parts machine. It is already torn apart and ready to go on ebay.
Not a bad deal. I am really happy with these and the price was right.

It sure is filling up. I also got 8 working Coinco changers out of the deal. The guy I got these from is a vending machine repair tech for Coke. He is a really nice guy. He said he is always picking up these machines from routes so he said he will be in touch with me. I hope to go visit him again soon. He has a really nice collection. A bunch of machines and buttons. What a cool job that would be. I hope to shoot paint on the 64 soon. I would like to get it done and sell it so I can afford to do the 55. It is going to need alot. I might even have to find another cabnet.

Wow... Look'n good! Wonder if the Hammertone was shot through a gun and thinned down
a little to lay smoother anyone know?...
Set a machine outside if you can to attract other machines... You running any ads?
Wonder if you ran a restoring ad if that would bring in calls...

Keep us posted on the progress....

I got in touch with the painter. The inside is painted with a hammer tone like paint available at sherwin williams. It is shot through a gun. It looks great!! I am not running any ads as of now. I actually found these on ebay. The 64 ran for a long time and never sold. I guess people didn't want to fool with putting it together. He ran the 55 for a few days with a buy it now of like $200 and no hits. I emailed him and he called me back on Christmas eve and we workrd out a deal. All 3 machines and 10 coin changers for $240. Talk about a great Christmas present. I now have the paint code for the 64 and I am going to try to shoot some paint before the weekend.

I did all the internal pieces on my VMC56 using Hammerite through a gun. I think the finish was great.  Had to thin it down a fair bit.  My first gun was a siphon feed HVLP from Sears.  It worked but I had to shoot it at pressures a fair bit higher than recommended.  I have since purchased a gravity feed HVLP gun (an ebay knockoff) that works great at proper pressures.

I did find that the second gun, shooting at a lower pressure, had less hammer dimpling on its finish than the first gun did.  Also seemed to show that the thinner the paint the less dimpling on the finish.

Looks good Josh nice find! here's some pic's of a Vendo HA56C I just picked up today, I scored it on Ebay, the seller didn't meet his reserve, but he offered it to me via a "second chance offer", & we came to an agreement, said he & his wife were moving & didn't wish to take it with them...and now it's in the 'Barn, It's nice (for a "C" model) it has the bottle door lamp, the lightup is perfect, hate the woodgrain, but she runs & is straight & solid...I also picked up a real nice Vendo V63/Coke I'll post some pictures of it too once I get my digital cameras memory stick up loaded to a cd, ran out of room on the camera...

Thanks guys... was wondering about the Hammer paint I've used the cans on some small
candy machines and found using several thin layers it doesn't dimple as bad. Looks really good
but I don't want to spray bomb a whole tub cause I'll never get it even like these small pieces
Good to know that it'll go through a gun as it is so thick.

Keep these images coming.... And the tips!

One thing though. If I were you I would buy a cheep gun for hammertone use only. Although I have never done it myself I have heard that it can be really hard to clean and can destroy a good paint gun. I bought a cheep touchup gun on ebay just for this reason. I think I paid like $15 or $20 for it.

Oh yes!!! Not right now but sometime. I am a little short on $$$. I am going to finish this 64 and then do the 55. After that I am going to think about another frosty. I thought I was going to use the Cs64G that I have to build one but I sold it to help pay for completing this 64. I was hoping to shoot paint tomorrow morning but my paint gun hasn't made it here yet.

Personally, I've had no problems cleaning it.  I will tell you that you should get a gun with a nozzle for primer and heavy paints (>= 2.0mm) so the gun doesn't clog when you use it.  A metal canister is also a must given the caustic nature of thiners and hardners.  I bought this gun on ebay.  Haven't used it for anything but hammerite so far, it's worked real well.

There was a thread several months ago that suggested we would set up a separate forum or even a repository for images we were willing to share or sources where we could buy.  This would be a great resource.  Coke logos are easy to find but all the others are non-existent or unknown.

Hammertone cleans up good with either laquer thinner or reducer. You shouldn't have an issue with ruinning your gun if you dis-assemble the needle valve assembly and use a gun cleaner kit. (various brushes) I use three different guns.
2.0 for hammertone and poly epoxy primer.
1.5 for single stage paint.
1.3 for base coat/clear coat. These work really well for me. :)

On your 55, I couldn't help but notice that in your picture it seems that the bottle chute located under the stack is missing.

Your vending problem could be a few things.
#1 - Located in the upper left hand side above the coin mech is the Vend Relay, if this is bad, you will not vend.

#2 - located beneath the vending stack is the vend motor, if the motor is bad or stuck due to any obstruction or any old gunked up oil it will prevent the mech from vending. There is also a cutout switch that is located next to the vend motor. If it's bad, no vend.

#3 - If the Sold Out Lever is jammed or bad (located on back of bottle door), it won't vend.

#4 - With just the coin door open, look down to the bottom middle of the door where the coin chute is. There is a switch and a metal lever that actuates when the bottle flap opens. It's calle the "Anti-Jackpotting" switch that prevents any product from being vending after it has opened.

Check all of these and if you still can't vend, we'll go from there!

Thanks Brian! I will check it out today. Also do I remember you having a sign for your 55 that was too small? If you do and you want to sell it I would like to buy it. It is the correct size for my 55E. I never noticed the vend chute being missing. Could you snap a pic of yours? Do you think it will be hard to make?

Post by: BrianB on January 18, 2006, 09:38:04 am
No problem, Josh. I actually sold that sign on Ebay a few months ago, sorry.

Here's a picture of another (not mine) 55 showing the bottle chute indicated by the big annoying red arrow. I can also take some more detailed pic's when I get home tonight and post them tomorrow.

I would think that it could reproduced. You'd need either a freestanding/bench mounted metal brake or a hand held brake to make it. From memory, I think it has about 3 bends.

I really want it to be a light up. If I can't find an origional I am going to have one made. I think that is what I am going to have to do. I am getting ready to have a frame made for the 64 so i will probably have the 55  frame made then.

There was so much talk about the 55 and the 64, but no one wonders what happened to that poor old 96??  :)
As y'all know, Josh has two machines that he isn't alowed to touch in the shop! One is the cooler he bought me for a present and the other is that long lost c-96...

I've been taking it apart for its sheet metal so I can make, among other things, a bottle stand for all the bottles he's collected and that shute that's missing out of the 55. So... its being "recycled"!! :)
This is what it looks like now... you'd never think it was at one time a coke machine!

Also, are these empty or full bottles that he is collecting (is he keeping them or drinking them)?

Lets see.. I tried to draw a picture for you. It makes sense to me, but I think it would just be a bunch of scribbly lines to anyone else! :) So here is the best I can do...
It has angle iorn for its three legs. It will be three levels tall each level being a peice of sheel metal (from the 96 of course!) for a total of about 3ft. Each level will be a triangular peice with a small round indent area just large enough for a bottle neck to hang from. Each bottle will hang from the peices of sheet metal on all three sides of the stand. I might have just confused you more, I'll definiatly post a pic of the completed project.

Here is a pic of the fledgling bottle collection. Its only about 6 months old. Right now its taking up the window sill in our bedroom, so the sooner I make this stand the better to show off all the bottles! :)

That sounds like a pretty neat project. Sounds like something I need to build! I have this weird obsession with keeping all of the bottles of soda pop that I consume (which isn't really a whole lot) but none the less I keep them all.

So......Right now I have them sitting in their original 6-pack containers which in turn are sitting in the cardboad case on top of my fridge.

To make a long story short, it would be cool to have an alternative means of storage for the bottles that I want to keep.

Let us know how it turns out!!

P.S. - Tell Josh that If he gets tired of the 55, I'll babysit it for him... :;):

Most of the filled bottles are Coke.  So yes on that part.  I pick up commemorative bottles when I see them.  The empty ones are from all over the US (a couple are from Mexico and Canada).  So no on that end.  A few came from local bottlers.

Those shelves have a lip on the front, so they can't scoot forward.  I have the screws going in to the studs, so that shelf does not vibrate or move that much.

Wow!!! I thought my collection was cool. I found a cool antique mall outside of Louisville ky that had a bunch of neet bottles that were really cheep so everytime I pass by I stop and buy a few. I don't really care if they are worth anything I just buy the ones I like. And me being rather young I don't remember when soda was available everywhere in bottles so they are all neet to me.

I have a few of the common 1950's bottles in my window too. I like to fill and re-cap them for display. I use Coke, rootbeer 7up etc.  The problem is the orange flavored drinks all turn yellow in color. Anyone used a food dye that would mix with water and look like orange crush?

Great job. Your machine is turning out nice. Question: how did you paint the white portion of the machine (did you paint the red and then the white?? or is it a large decal??) whatever it is, looks great.

I have a vendo 63A that I plan on painting, it has the same paint schem and I have not work that part out.

thanks

The coke logo is a decal from funtronics. They are slightly expensive but they are nice. If you are asking about the white on the sides I honestky don't know how it was done. I didn't paint the machine. I bought the machine half done. They had painted everything except the coin door and some of the white stuff but I decided to repaint all of the white pieces. The white on the cabnet is painted on and the painted did a really great job doing it and then the have a coke is a vinyl decal.

Real nice job Josh... looks like you've really taken to painting.  Do you just spray inside the shop?  Anything special to keep the rest of the room (and stuff in it) from getting painted?

Josh (or anybody here really) just looking at this restoration...
It made me remember a story in Club Soda of a guy who opened a little shop to restore
machines..... then he got the idea to put a float in the town parade.... he put machines
and coolers he had restored on the float along with his name and number.... got a ton of
replies and customers. Has anyone else ever done this?....
Might be a good way to drum up some business and scarce machines sitting around the town.

Thanks everyone. I can't take too much credit for this one since I only did some of the work. The inside is painted with a hammer tone like paint made by sherwin williams. I bought it already painted. I am spraying paint inside the shop. I just cover everything and wet the floor to help cut down on dust. I also bought an good HVLP paint gun. It only needs 8 to 10 psi. Since their is so little pressure there is very little overspray. It works great. I also have a small touch up gun that isn't HVLP. You can really tell the difference. The machine will run later and I will post a link.

Josh........you turned out a nice product!  Since you are in Memphis, I think you could do MUCH better $$$ than e-bay.
I have never been to Graceland, but know there must be dozens of shops offering 1960's trivia to tourist's who visit Elvis's estate.
Your machine could be on consignment to one of those stores, and/or vending at a profit. Their customers are drawn to 1960's nostalgia.... and they are your target market!
Approach a manager with your plan.......if this one makes him $$$, he'll probably do a lot more buisness with you.....

One more thing, a customer who drops his money in your machine, and gets an ice-cold soda ..............will pay much more for it, than the guy 2000 miles away who is trusting you that it that it works and then asks you to ship it.

Thanks Kito. There isn't much difference at all except a few trim pieces. Other than that they are the same.

I have now started on the 55. I decided to restore it after all. I started on it today and I spent the whole day on it. I striped it down to bare metal and I worked out the dents. It is almost ready for primer. I should have it primed tomorrow and I will shoot paint on Monday if the weather is good.

Terry on this one I used a DA sander. I do normally strip them but this machine had so much surface rust.

audiobeer, I could if you want  :D . I should have it to forward air sometime tomorrow.

Its funny you should ask! I'm cutting out the main peices from the old 96 tomorrow morning! I'm hoping to have it mostly welded together tomorrow! (Of course, I've also been saying that for a week now.)
I'll post some pictures of the work in progress if you'd like! :)

Wooooohoooooo!!!! It sold for $1750.99. I can't believe it. Now I just hope the 55 does this good. It is almost ready for paint thanks to Kates welding skills. I tested the vending motor and it works so I should have it done in a week or two.

I have put this machien on hold for a little while. I am having a hard time finding a refrigeration person local to work on this machine. The condinser coil is rusted out on it. I was thinking about using a lower unit from a spare C64 system I have. Does anyone know if that will work. I thought I would throw in this pic of the 55 for Markito. :D

At least everything is in a plastic tub.  If you put felt on the bottom of the tub Markito will give you a thumbs up!  :p
