My first dispenser

You have a very nice look dispenser there Pat. I have a few questions for you and some info. First off it looks like it has been “restored”, I say this because of the plate behind the dispensing valve is painted yellow and it should be nickel or chrome plated. This style of dispenser is from the late 40’s to mid 50’s and is identified by the large chrome trim going all the way around the top. The next thing I see on yours is that I don’t think is has the original lid, all of the Multiplex dispensers with the lager trim I have seen have had a chrome (looks like a door pull) handle. The one on yours looks to have the same handle that is on the dispensers form the late 30’s early 40’s. The lid may have been a left over and use on your later dispenser, if that is the case the handle should be black not painted yellow. The good news is that both the handle and the plate come off very easily and could be redone with out too much work. The other thing that helps date these dispensers is the knob on the valve handle, the pre-war knobs are black with a metal button on them and the post-war knobs are solid black or red. As for a model number here is what I can tell you. The earlier ones (30’s/40’s) are Model 22’s and I don’t know if Multiplex changed the model number when they changed the looks. Multiplex was never very good at labeling there dispensers and when they where bought in the 70’s most of there records where thrashed, so I would think you could refer to yours as a late model 22.

As for value it is based on the following:
1.   The biggest thing (out side of the brand) is completeness yours looks to be complete with the exception of the syrup tank lid, which shouldn’t effect the value too much
2.   Brand name, so far what I have found is it comes down to two categories in the dispenser world Coca-Cola and non-Coca-Cola. With Coca-Cola bring the top dollar (with a few exceptions and they were not available in Coca-Cola so…).
3.   Condition as with everything collectible is key.
4.   Age, desirability, rarity and availability.
Ok now for yours. As I said before it is pretty much all there and the missing lid shouldn't take anything away form it. It may have come with a drip tray but I find not having one (unlike other dispensers) doesn’t take away from the 22’s value. For brand name in the non-Coke category with its bright color and attractive logs are a plus. Condition is very good, some collectors will not buy restored dispensers, but it shouldn’t make too much difference on this one. Age is from late 40’s to mid 50’s, desirability is good on it because it is a single drink model (most of this style where multi drink and a much lager dispenser). This is not a common dispenser but I would not call it rare. Availability for this type is low, most of the one that come up for sale are the large multi drink ones so that is good for the value. Now for a dollar amount I would put it anywhere from $450.00 to $750.00 or more if you found a couple of Vernor’s collectors to fight over it.Just for comparison if it was a Pepsi brand dispenser you would be looking at $600.00 to $900.00 and if it where a Coke version $1,100.00 to $1,500.00 (per-war Coke you are looking at $2,000.00 to $2,500.00)
