when buying a brand new compressor. can it be charged with any refridgerant i want?? or are there differences

But seriously, compressors used for soda  machines ( medium temperature/capillary systems) can be ordered for either R12 or R134A compatibility, the choice usually falls into one of these two types. if in doubt, ask your jobber. ( supplier) , since I'm replacing older R12 systems most of the time, I request a 1/4 HP R12 unit with a low-side service valve & high-torque start (capacitor assisted starting) but the size is determined by the application ( bigger isn't better) I recharge with an R12 replacement (sometimes with the genuine R12 by request). in your case I'd just match the original size/HP.

don't try to re-engineer something silly like running R404A ( a low temp/higher pressure refrigerant) in a R12 system, bad things will happen quickly.
