wow.. it amazes me how anyone can take a rusting shell and restore it to a shiny new working machine..  (actually it amazes me how you can do anything with it at all !)

That will be one heck of a project, Joey.  Are you going to try and fix the main cabinet or do you have a Vendo 80 shell or something lined up?  By the way, how much did you pick that one up for?

I ended up trading a coin mech for it, I have a near complete 80 on the way but also working on getting a 81A front door so I may save the cabinet for that project. Im actually going to be shopping for a welder and attempt the project myself. Its actually not as bad as it looks.

Joey, good for you taking on the task of bringing that one back to life!!
Poor thing looks like it fell off a truck got hit by a car and ended up in a stream. You will have it looking brand new in no time. Please share some pics as it goes along.

I have a cav 51 that is pretty rusty around the bottom.  I have been thinking it was going to be too big of a job and I might just part it out.  In light of these pics, I will keep my near mint 51 to tinker with.

Good luck and I am anxious to see this one when it is done.

But just a heads up you ain't gonna have time to touch that.... When the little woman
gets through with you it will have rusted away completely.

Amen to that Eric! On top of sleepless nights and constant feeding and crying...there's paybacks for nine months of gestation. The wife is gonna demand some playtime herself leaving you with the dirty job.

I'm joining you Joey in 11 days!

Joey,
I'm glad to see that your salvaging the cabinet. Use a 2x6 and a 2-4# hammer from the inside of the cabinet to remove that big dent. You'll be amazed how easy it will be to get it straightened out.  '<img'>

Patching rust through areas should not be too difficult, as always....the hardest part is starting the project, gets easier the better it looks.  I see the typical 81 rust through on the beltline in the rear,  but is that a rust hole in the top of the back panel? How would water collect there?      And any idea why it was nesessary for some dimwit to chisel a hole in your main door?   ':p'

Looks like a swamp find.... I have run into a few of those.. not 81's but Chest coolers where all you see is the top and when you try to pull it out of the earth... all you get is the top! Pretty much shot from there.  My grandfather owned a bottling plant and that is where  I got my bug. Of course no machines to speak of but when I started getting into this 10 years back or so.. I went back to our hunting land in norther wisconsin to "Search" and this is where I found about 8 old rusted out, Westinghouse/Cavalier Chest coolers, 2 39 cabinets (80%rusted out) a CS 72 and some Square tops... All where in a Dumb and mostly burried and under water... Oh what a shame... what a shame!

This one is believed to come out of a old dump, Its rough but worth saving, 10 even 5 years ago this would have been considered a loss. Remember the roundtop 56 with no bottom everyone thought I was nuts until they seen it with a bottom back on and standing up once again. My local friends thought I had lost it when it came home, now they see the 81 and dont even think anything about it.

Depending on the route I take to my parents' house, there is one headed down Route 29 in VA where across a field at a tree line I noticed a bunch of what look to be square top machines just sitting in the woods.  It is a ways from the road, but you can make out what they are if you are looking and know what they are.  I had gone past a few times and never noticed until last year.

How about these stories that the Army/Air Force just dropped a load of soda Machines and jukes into
the jungles of Vietnam and then just left them there. I wonder if there is any truth on that???

Dave.

Hey Jeff,

It is north of Madison, I want to say around Culpeper. It is right next to a VDOT "terminal".  I am going to look at a map to see if I can remember exactly where it was.  I know it when I drive it, know what I mean?  How far up 29 are you coming?

Last fall I was riding a train (one of those scenic raliways) with my wife and 4 year old son when I was looking out the window and saw just the tops of a bunch of machines in a backyard peeking out from behind a 6ft +/- privacy fence.  It was right next to the road and we were just leaving the town. That was in NW PA. Will have to check that again.

Joey, I have faith that the cabinet will once again shine.  Send me your mailing address in a PM, I want to send you something for the baby.....Also I traded for an Ideal 85 embossed Nesbitt so the juke box will have to wait but at least I have a new project...

i believe the hole in the coin door area is from a tractor fork, It has also been dropped real hard on the right side as its square at the bottom and goes in a good inch as you move up the machine. I'll get some better closeups of the rusted areas hopefully you guys can give me some ideas.
