Hi All,

Thanks for the warm welcome. Here she is. As I said in a previous post I have her 50% apart. Working a bit each day. Allot of rot to repair, but nothing I can't handle! These two photos were taken before I really tore into her. HMMM< can I post more than two pics per post? Enjoy.

Getting the screws out from the door hinge was interesting. I used a Kant-Twist clamp and clamped a philips head bit onto each screw. I put a small piece of aluminum shim under the rear foot (to protect my clamp) and had a 7/16 wrench on the phillips bit. It worked like a charm and saved having to drill out the screws.

I also managed to get the black plastic insulation covers off. The door was easy save for the bottom row. I had to cut slots in each Phillips head using a Cut-off wheel on a dremel tool. Worked great. The black covers around the cooler side of the machine were a diferent story. The screws all came out no probleme. F.L. Jacobs sealed the panels with some sort or tar based sealant (1950's RTV?). I had to use a heat gun. I heated up the outside edge of the machine. I did not wan't to put heat directly on the panels. Does anyone know what these panels aremade of? Some kinf of hard paperboard? Being very careful the tar based sealer let go once the heat got to it and the panels slid out. Phew, no chips or cracks or melting of anything I did not intend.

Next will be the refridgeration unit. Probably this weekend.

Joe

Save these images for the photo gallery here... will be awesome to look back at this after you have her better than new!
Good Luck and take a lot of picture (to remember where everything goes)

Great work so far and welcome to the family!
We're glad that you are here.
I have always wanted a Jacobs, but have yet to find one in my area.
Keep on sharing your restoration story.

Sounds like you are definitely on your way. Yeah, the black gunk was used widely. It was also used in the automotive world as a seam sealant for body panels. Nasty stuff...

Mark I found one local, but it is missing the rack and coin mech. It is in good shape and cools. He he also has a Cornelius like your red and white one but it is missing the rack but has the coin mech. He wants $350 for both. I am trying to talk him down. Would you be interested? I might have to pass because I had a guy call me yesterday with 3 upright machines and a few chests in Cincinnati. I am going to go see what he has while I am at home. he says he also has a bunch of signs and a few gas pumps so I need to save my money.

KevinC told me WD-40 works well on removing that stuff.  He was right.  Squirt it on liberally and the tar will wipe off easily.

Josh

Are those emails off your website?

If so are they all local to where you are living? If they are emails from around the country I am sure the rest of us would pay a finders fee for tips on machines in our areas.

I am not sure why I am thinking about this because I went down in flames with my wife over the VMC Faygo machine.

Actually so far all of the emails are from wanted ads on Craigslist. Besides the one in cincinnati all of them have been in Minneapolis. Kevin is there anything you are looking for? I will keep an eye out for you if there is something special that you are looking for. I am sure there is a forward air here somewhere. I shipped a V63 from Memphis to Cincinnati earlier this month for only $80.
