Title: Vmc 81 7-up
Post by: 90grad on January 03, 2006, 06:04:48 am
All,

A man named Leroy contacted me about my ad on Craigslist.  He has a 7-UP VMC 81 he's looking to sell.  He knows it's worth some cash, as he saw an 81 go on eBay for over a grand.  Anyway, I could never afford this, so I thought I'd provide his contact info and a few photos.  He lives in California and has had the machine for years. His email address is uglyleroy@foothill.net

Nice machine... looks pretty solid.... Hope someone here gets it.... (Glen or Terry looks to be in your
neck of the woods.... as usual!Ha) Last unrestored 7up I seen was at Chicago 2 years ago...
it had a price of $10,000 walked back later it was sold!

All,

I just emailed him telling him a few folks may be interested.  I provided both MoonDawg's and vendobaldtop's email addresses to him.  I also asked for his phone number if he is willing to provide it.  He's been a very cordial and prompt person in all the email traffic I've had with him.

If one of you buy this, you owe me a Vendo Coke 81!:p

Guys (Moondawg, vendobaldtops, sodaworks),

I heard from Leroy and he is going to contact you directly.  So, when can I expect my Vendo 81? I'll also settle for a good Vendo 110 as my finders fee! :p

I talked to Terry and Sean last night. Leroy called all three of us by phone and is trying to get us into a bidding war. We made him our offers, and now the ball is in his court.

Title: Vmc 81 7-up
Post by: 90grad on January 04, 2006, 12:15:48 pm
Glen,

When I asked him how much he wanted, his reply was he saw one like it (I am assuming a Coke 81) go on eBay recently for $1830, plus shipping.  He may not know how much it's really worth.  He then said "we'd talk about price."

Good luck.

Glen,

Did the discussions go well and what kind of price range has been established if he wants "bidding wars"...?

Title: Vmc 81 7-up
Post by: sodaworks on January 04, 2006, 02:30:28 pm
I have been in the dentist chair all morning!!! I agree with Glen, we are being pulled into a bidding war. Glen and I have an agreement on the 7up machine. I have called Leroy and left him a message on my bid price. Although I want the machine, I am not going to run the price up on Glen.  ???

I am hoping that Glen has been on a road trip today to Sacramento to get the machine. I really wanted the machine but as I said earlier Glen and I made an agreement and I'm a man of my word. Had it been anyone else outside of SMC they would have to of beat me to it.

You guys read the tea leaves. Yes MoonDawg left Ventura at 3:30 this morning for a 450 mile trip 1 way to find an address in a little mining town near lake Tahoe where Sutter's mill still exists and the first gold nugget was found sparking the 1848 Calif gold rush.  What an adventure!  OK  900 miles and 16 hours later the Dawg returns, with a VMC 7up 81  proudly in back of his truck.
Thanks Wayne / Terry / Sean....what a rush owning such a rare machine, it's very straight too. It was left over from a motel his parents owned in the sixties.
Price?  Let me just say, Leroy was happy!! ( He lives in a cabin in the mountains and builds Harleys)
I have a rust inhibitor I sometimes spray on surface rust, then wash it off, and works well on white paint surfaces. You have seen the old pic's, let's find out how good this machine can look without new paint.  Will post pic's in a few days.

SMC saves an orphan machine!  Thanks to all!!!!!

Glen,
Congratulations!  Glad that you got back safely and that there was a break in the weather (finally!).  Looks like all of SMC should get props for communication and coordination for working to keep this machine in "da family."  Props to Leroy too for not putting it on eBay and shipping it to Elyria, Ohio...he he...

Please post pics after you get some sleep and have some time to clean it up..that was a helluv a drive!   Actually, I bet you will still up for a few more hours...  :)

Again, super cool machine and was great talking to you during the sweating out period.  Remember guys and gals, there are still more out there!

All,

Welp, here it is.  Glen (Moondawg) asked if I could post these photos of his new 7up beauty.  I'll post two more in the next post.

I think I can speak for everyone in saying this is a true treasure.  I'm real happy to have helped another member get something and keep it "in the family."

Thanks, I tried and post a pic. and kept getting "timed out" ?

This 81 is nicknamed Wayne's Find. It's one of the straightest rust-free machines I have ever come across. Everything works. Shows signs of very little use.
Sprayed "Rustmort" over a section at a time, allow to sit for 30 minutes, scrub and rinse.  Logo was cleaned with a Q-tip.
Hope many more machines will come alive this way!

Title: Vmc 81 7-up

Seems to me a restoration would distort the original beauty here. We were talking earlier about welding logos into 81's. This machine has nothing to hide the way it is, I'd sure like to keep it that way as long as I own it.

Incredible Machine, what a find...

I'm just getting caught up on the last posts about my user name.. if it's too confusing with the other Coke and Stuff (joey) id .. .let me know I can change it ... It's just that I have used that since about 98 on ebay, and own the www domain Cokenstuff.  No bid deal if you guys think it's too confusing... i'll change it on this board...

Browsing around/wasting time on the site and came across this post. Cool story and evidence that SMC members have always been there for each other.
What happened to this machine? - Do you still own it Glen? Wayne - did you ever get an 81 from Glen?
And Happy Aniversary John! Guess you never changed your user name and everybody got used to having 2 Coke & Stuffs.

Hi Tom,

This was a really cool story.  Glen rewarded me (which was TOTALLY unnecessary) quite well.  Although it wasn't an 81  :tounge:, it was something that will look great with the 110 I am currently restoring.  I believe Glen sold this machine on eBay after doing an amazing job cleaning it up.

Yeah,
that is fun to go back and read these posts.. that is when I just got on this board... and the old coversation about the user name.
Tom, I did change it, and have gone by signguy on the board since then?
I do use Coke-n-Stuff, on a few other boards that I havent' taken the time to change..

I think there is another VMC 7up 81 coming up for auction on from that guy in Oklahoma.. I talked to him yesterday and he said he has like 18 more machines coming up .. al lfrom a private collector... plus an RC 81 as well!  he will not sell outside of ebay ,and everything is selling with NO RESERVE... will be fun to watch.

John
