I found this jukebox local to my Mom. They say it is complete and powers up and works but he has no records to test with. I can get it for $400. Is that a good deal for this box? I think its good looking. I know the value is not equal to the seeburgs but I is $400 for a good solid box like this a great deal or just Ok? I don't want to buy something I am upside down on.

Josh,
I think this is a fair price...
There appears to be glass missing in the front grill so there may be other misc. issues as well...
If possible, have someone bring a few 45s and place them randomly throughout the carriage and test a few selections both A & B sides as well. I have personally repaired a RocK-Ola selection unit, 1468 model, not fun to work on...
With my personal experience, I would like to know all the selections are functioning and then I would say the $400 is a good buy.

It's a Rockola 1448. circa 1955. If the glass isn't broken, the fornt grill and pther chrome are intact 9 and look to be in the be in the pic) I'd grab it. Make sure the chrome isn't heavily pitted, or knock over a bank if you plan to rechrome all the parts  |

that is a great price for that machine. someone recently parted one out on ebay. and sold the parts for almost 1500.00 the unique feature of this jukebox is the rotating selection strip. i have this same jukebox. buy it cant go wrong

Thank you that was very nice. I think I will be buying it. I will test it and if it doesn't select I may part it out. However I like the way it looks so it may be one to put away until I get back.

After some research it is a 1454. It looks a lot like the 1448 but the glass dome is different in that it says Rockola on top

Josh,
I wouldn't just part it out if the Selection Receiver isn't working properly. $400 is a cheap price for a nice juke and if it's something simple like a bad component or a wiring problem, that can be fixed for fairly cheap.

Yep I agree. I have already decided to get it as long as its still available. I emailed the seller. We will see. I hope I get it. I wouldn't mind keeping it. One of my favorites is the Seeburg R and this looks a lot like it.

Well I bought it. My step dad is going to go get it this weekend. It is in a little worse shape than I expected but its still not bad. The chrome for the most part looks good. One glass piece on the front is missing and the other is broken but it is reproduced. The Cabinet needs refinished but it is solid. I can still back out until sunday. I am going to post a bunch of pictures. Please give me your advice. If I should walk away please tell me. Also she put records in it. It wants to powers on and takes a selection but it just continues to rotate and doesn't stop to pick up the selection. Please help with advice or if anyone knows of another forum that I should go to for advice,

The problems aren't a deal breaker, veneer is readily available, you've already found most parts beiekn are repopped. The lack of selection could be a bad wire not energizing the selection pins, or 50 yrs of gunk gumming up the works ie selection pins, until you can actually check it out, it's difficult to trouble shoot. The Wurlitzer group onmn Yahoo is bout the friendliest help you're going to find on the internet. Looks like you scored a good juke, Josh! Like Kilroy said, the selection problem is very common for a box of it's age. After a good cleaning and maybe a little troubleshooting, you should have no problems. Get a manual!!

As Brian said this is a very common problem on Rockolas... Is it all selctions are just a few??
Is the wheel spinning looking for the selection??
What normally happens is the selection pins near the bottom of the bank get gummed up with all the sh*t falling to the bottom and won't fire out. You can manually pop them out and see if they are collected then...
Cleaning the pinbank is a big job for someone like me but I'm sure with your knowledge and experience it won't take you long to get it going...
On my Empress I have a number of selections that need double selected or even more before they will ping out...

Of course, it may work in your favour, missing peices, no selection, maybe knock a hundred off the price?
i'll also toss in the standard, recap the amp and receiver, check the wiring, etc disclaimer here. And i agree with Brian, order the manual

I honestly do not know as i have not seen the box. She only checked one selection and it was working 100% when it came out of her mother-in-laws bar 12 years ago and was moved into storage. I have not seen it and I am buying it sight unseen. She is firm on the price. She was offered $150 more than my offer locally but since she told me she accepted my offer first she honored the sale and kept it for me. She is a really nice lady. I figure if it is too messed up to fix it is worth a lot more than $400 in parts. Especially since most of the chrome is good, the glass is all good, and everything is there besides two small glass pieces in the front that are reproduced. So I think the price was a good deal. I will be home in about three weeks and will tear into it. I wont try to tackle the vending mech and amp myself. I will send them out to be rebuilt eventually.

Thanks guys. I have it now and it is in better shape than I thought. My Mom sent me pics when they got it into the garage. I agree about not blowing right through this restoration. I will play around with it a little when I am home but I am just going to put it aside and wait utill I move home to do anything major to it. I like this box a lot. I like the style, I like the lines of the box, and I like that it is something different than the Seeburgs The we have always had. This is a keeper. I don't think the chrome is too bad but it will probably have to be redone so I should probably start saving now to pay for the chrome At least I got a good deal on the box so it will all even out. Check out the pic. Next to the Vendorlator 81 I picked up a few weeks ago. Its getting parted out and going to the dump. |
