Think this is the place for this....
 
Picked up this complete working 64.
Going to take it down to main parts and scrap the rest. Do not want to store useless stuff.
Keeping vending stack, shelves/spacers, and compressor/cooling unit.
Beyond these.....

Here are my questions.


What should I keep?
What parts are in common need?

Why are you tearing down a complete working machine just to scrap it? Are you going into the parts business? I don't get it? That is a desirable square top and can be made to look nice once the wood grain is removed.

Oh - OK.
I'd keep the bottle door, coin door and cap/coin boxes, main door latch & strike. Everything that is easily removed. Somewhere, sometime, somebody will need it.

 Sorry That burns my A**  veryangry  that you would take a perfectly good machine and break it down and your doing it for parts ...                       It sounds like the machine you have is in need of parts and should be the parts machine .    Well nothing like destroying a piece of history

Agreed without parts machines many more would not be complete and functioning. I think of it this way this one machine parted out will keep 10 machines going.

I have parted out machines to get parts for mine as it is by far the most cost effective way to do it. Like Joey and Glen have said, the hobby needs parts machines. I just didn't understand what you were doing from your first post.
I do usually try to find the parts individually, but from the list of what you needed, buying this machine for your parts is the way to go. You probably would have spent more on the parts than you did on the whole machine.

It's not a matter of Okay or not okay. Personally, as long as you aren't  stealing the machines, I could care less.  The hobby wouldn't exist without part machines.

 I'm fine with breaking down a machine that is beat to hell and missing parts that's great go for it   but taking a machine  that still looks good
and runs that is not right ,  It's like getting a 66 mustang that needs everything then finding a 66 mustang that is in great shape and saying you going to
stripe that one down for the parts.  Oo

They only made so many and a lot of those were destroyed  by the distributor or the by the owner of the store or gas stations or even by Jon doe who wants it for target practice after he has striped it down .  there are vendors out there that sell parts ( and they keep adding new parts every year) maybe not always the part you need , so you do a little hunting  on ebay or craigslist  or even here, some one may have that part.

the number are getting fewer and fewer .

Pat, when you restore a machine, do you provide re-branding for a customer that wants it, or would you refuse to restore to anything but the original branding? If I wanted a Mountain Dew Cavalier 64 from a Coca-Cola one that was in less-than-perfect but presentable condition, and I was willing to pay what you wished to charge, would you do it?

You've been in my shop?
You know the back story that brought me to this decision? (without me telling it)
Or did you base your opinions on a couple of photos?

In short.
It's a metal box full of parts made by people.
Nothing special..
 I asked for help on this site to find the TWO PARTSI needed.
And when I found this machine, I posted this to help others in finding the parts they need.
Not to read a bunch self serving crap.

And just to pour gas on the fire burning your a$$.
All I needed was a $15 switch and a tiny master link for the chain in the vending stack.

No ill will to any one. But please keep your opinons limited to the question I asked.

Have you tried a bike shop for the master link?

        I am going to take a stand on Pat's behalf. The link and switch and many more parts can be robbed off any late model CSS which are very plentifull. The USS on the other hand is becomming a favorite because of the bottle and can selections, and yes it is a shame to scrap it.
        If it's not too late, I probably have the parts you need to complete both your USS machines.

I'll try and explain myself here....
First off I would like to appollogize for my behavior on this thread.

The full story how I got here.

I picked up my first machine ( the older one) about six months ago.
 I knew it needed a slug rejector.
But didn't realize what they had done to it to make it free vend.
I started the search for parts.
I asked on this site, looked on  EBay, CraigsList, asked friends, called local repair shops...
Nothing....
I managed to repair the damage and fabricate a couple of small parts.
Got a swith from Soda Jerk, very nice and helpful folks, thanks guys!
But still needed a few things.

Found the woody on craigs list for a steal.
All I thoight when I saw the C/List ad was "oh boy the parts I need!".
But after seeing it in person,  I realized it was in fairly good shape and could be restored...
 I now had to make a choice to make.
A: Part out this compleat machine for what I need.
Or...
B: Restore it...
Seems simple enough,  right??

Not.

First off I like the look of the older one MUCH better.
 Fake wood is so tacky.
Secondly, no one had the parts I needed.
Not a peep out of this forum until now.

So, as much as I really did hate to tear in down, from my point of view, I had no choise.
I posted  an ad on here wts parts , before this thread, and have buyers who also need parts.
Not going to leave them hanging if I can help .

So....

This post has done for me what I hoped it would and so much more than I asked for.

To our dear USS 64 woody.
We will remember your sacrifice.
And may you rest in peace...

All I was trying to say, in as diplomatic a way as possible, was I didn't feel it was my place to try to tell you or anyone else how to handle your soda machines. Now, I might offer some advice if I really thought it might to your benefit (i.e. You were scrapping a considerably more valuable machine to restore a not-so-vaulable one, and I knew it, I might say "are you sure..."), but at the end of the day it would still be your concern what you decided to do with them, and not mine.

It's just a square top pop machine at the end of the day . I would so the same thing . Get what I needed and part out the rest for $$$ .
We do it to sliders all the time ... I don't see what the big deal is . If your making money and love this hobby then he'll ya ! Part that baby out !  happydrinkers

I can see both sides here. In some people's eyes its like chopping up an 81d to fix your v144. But, when your looking for the parts you need, game on! I just bought a small door 110 for the rejector. Rest is parts, but I looked for a rejector for about a year.


Personally, since its a common and a square top, chop, chop!!!

I searched as well didn't see anything.

The stir this thread has created....WOW!

But, yes, I did get the switch from "Soda Jerks".
The master link, from the dead woody.
The bicycle shop was of no help.
they had never seen one that small.
The chain is about 1/3 the size of a bike chain.

Let it run for now.
To answer your questions.
All I took to the scrap yard was the cabinet and front door.
If it un-bolted I kept it.
The following has been sold..
Shelf adjusters.
coin door bezel.
coin mech
bottle door glass top bracket
Bottle opener & bezel

The rest is still here.

Cabinet and door 160 LBS.
$13
