Title: Peter Max Design V-63 Found in La. Warehouse.
Post by: Rebel on August 14, 2013, 09:40:40 pm
Hello everyone. First time on forum and look forward to meeting a new crowd of folks.
This is my second machine to go through. First was a spintop which got me hooked.
Picked this 63 up in a warehouse where it had been for many years in La. An ol Cajun who I think was retiring told me it was given to him years ago by a lady on his route and has been warehoused since.
I'm very curious about the Peter Max design lighted display. I've seen many of Peter Max art work on Ebay and other sites but none with the clouds at bottom of display and then the night sky with stars then a rainbow and night sky again at the top. With the display light on, I think it's about the coolest I've seen yet. Does anyone know anything about this display. I have found nothing even close to this design.
So far, I've almost completed the interior and about to start the exterior so am sure I'll have many questions.
Will post more pics later,,trying to get this resizing down right now.LOL

Welcome to the board!  Nice sign, I haven't seen one like it before...the Peter Max designs definitely are unique

Here's another much larger one that's on Ebay now: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PETER-MAX-7up-sign-RainBOw-SEE-THE-LIGHT-extremely-rare-pop-machine-NIGHT-SCENE-/300925070870?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4610882e16

I'd say that your sign would be more valuable as it fits in Vendo 63's and 90's, which are more popular machines.  Tough to get a real price gauge without seeing what one has sold for either.

Thanks for the welcome,,appreciate it.
Thanks for posting the Ebay auctions on Peter Max. Had run across these and also many others by entering in Yahoo search box,,,,"pictures of Peter Max & 7UP" Had many but no night sky at bottom. Yes,,will be hard to determine value without any such information as of yet.
About to pull cooling unit so go to get to work. Take care and thanks for the info

Thanks for sharing the thread on the Peter Max. In a search, I found that design but still have been unable to find the one on my 63. Will post more pics in a week or so. I have it disassembled right now doing a complete overhaul and adding some neon inside.
One of the things on my list is finding an artist to repair two very small areas where paint has been rubbed on backside of rainbow display.  Most wouldn't notice but I know.LOL

No pics yet, but just wanted to say I'm finished with the inside of the 63 and just about ready to spray front. Also waiting on green neon to install behind selection panel and also behind marquee. Am also changing out the adjustable levelers to longer bolts to raise machine up high enough for green neon under machine. Guess the custom thing is a carry over from my street rod building days.LOL Will post some pics soon.

Welcome! ....Wow that's a really cool idea with the neon, I love anything that lights up especially neon.....Where are you getting it from... is it custom?

My old plain USS 96 needs some customizing....

Agree, under machine lighting is a great idea. Small LED's projecting light out from the lower vents of rounds tops would be very cool.

I have a SV with P. Maxs 7-up side logos that don't match yours but are nice. Maybe some Photoshop combination of the two images would get you something of use.

Beat from traveling but will get some pics up Mon.

Thanks. No, not custom or at least not at this point. Am talking to retailers for street neon. The neon some install underneath their cars or motorcycles. Some are real neon, some are LED's made to look similar to neon. They will be 12v units,,I do know that much but have no idea how much light is generated from 6",8",12" or 18" unit and some have built in transformers and some have a separate unit to power the neon. So have questions if there is any real difference in light appearance or brightness when you compare the two systems. As I told the kid at Autozone when I was there trying to get some info,,,at 65, I missed the neon underneath care era and had a few questions. LOL
Glad you like the neon idea. I also think it will be an eye catcher and plus I'm leaving all the original light fixtures in machine,,so none of you who believe in only an original restoration won't give me such a hard time.LOL

Look forward to the pics Creighton. Yes,,,am also looking at green neon behind the lower front grill. Going to try one there when they come in to see how much light will come through the many vent cuts in panel.

I believe Pat  put neon under an Ideal 55, and I've used the car tubes on a Seeburg G.  In Michigan neon lights on a car are illegal, yet the automotive stores still carry them

Title: Re: Peter Max Design V-63 Found in La. Warehouse.
Post by: Rebel on August 19, 2013, 03:18:25 pm
well,, from what I can gather, the neon being sold on Ebay and in the auto parts stores are actually cold cathode units where neon produces much more heat so if I'm not mistaken,,the CCFL lighting you can buy at Lowes or any other lighting store, is the same as the different length tubes these guys are selling.

Got most all back together today. Had a slight issues with coin door alignment but after a couple of washers added for spacers, all is good. Selection door, grill, coin door and coin mech. and area inside coin door,,,,DONE. Also got the coin drop panel pained but still looking for info on how to install without scratching up new paint on door where panel installs.

STILL LOOKING FOR OPENER BEZEL.

Front complete with marquee and backlight less decals. Factory bulb in selection area was replaced with green CCFL and as soon as neon comes in, will light up selection panel and inside will be green neon glowing through selection holes.

        Wow........that looks awesome!  :happydrinkers:

I believe you have brought squaretop machines up to a new level. Thanks for sharing, I'm going to borrow your idea. 8)

        I think I have your bezel, fits a cutout 2.75" X 1.5".

Looking very good!  To think that was sitting in a warehouse just waiting...If you're interested in some trim that pops, you can buy the 5/8" chrome trim strips from Autozone, Advance, or whatever is near you.  They actually work perfect as trim on these and you can mitre the corners to really finish them off.  I used them on my V-90 and was happy with the results, as you can see I need the bottle opener bezel as well, somewhere someone has a huge collection on them on a wall, as I can't find one anywhere  :glare:

Hey,,thanks guys,,really appreciate it.
Let me measure my opener area again but think that 1.5 may be on the small side. Thanks for mentioning it and will be back with you on that measurement but think it's 2" wide. Will check.
Like that idea of the chrome trim. Will look at that and see what I can come up with.
Back with you shortly on measurement and thanks again for that chrome trim idea. Like it.

Just took a closer look at your chrome work and like it. What kind of lighting did you use for selection panel ?

It's just the standard fluorescent bulb, no big changes.  I can take some better photos of the chrome trim if you need, I used a miter box and a fine blade to get perfect 45's at the corners.

I think I found a bottle opener bezel with the correct dimensions.

And you would get a pack of Conecuh smoked Sausage from south Alabama if you have found one.
I located an Ebay auction for what looked to be a trashed 63 for $100.00 and sent him a message that if he didn't sell it and decided to part it out I wanted the bezel and he agreed but auction not over so that's as close as I've gotten to one.LOL

Can ya post a pic possibly ?

I have one that you described with the words opener stamped in the top. BUT my inside measurements measure 2 inches wide and 3 1/4 tall on the inside measurements. The bezel is larger, are you measuring the hole on your coin door for your measurements?

Thanks,

Joey

The machine on E-bay is an early model 63, that bezel will not fit your late model 63.

I am measuring the opening in coin door. That measurement you have would be correct if you're measuring the opening if you were looking at it INSTALLED. That inside measurement you got would be on the very edge of coin door opening if installed. Got to be correct one I'd think.

Moondawg, Think you are right but the design is correct I think. Joey's measurement of bezel opening I think would be the correct one as that measurement of bezel edge would be almost exactly where it would fit in coin door hole.

Joey,,can you shoot me a pic of what you found ?

Green neon and green LED's should be in tomorrow. Have all the wiring done and lower comp. area painted and waiting. Had to go with LED'S inside as the neon puts off way to much heat and is 110v,,the green neon that will go under machine is 12v so ran a power strip in lower comp. compartment with a 12v convertor and will plug 110v LED's in power strip.
Thanks to Joey,,,have a opener bezel coming in from him and it was a pleasure doing biz with him. Thanks Joey.

Well,,here ya go,,what do you folks think ? Had a little vending problem after getting all the wiring done but seems to be fine after doing a little jiggle here and there. Didn't use a flash which made the marquee a little to bright.

Finished up the painting today and got all back in order and cooling down a row of beer for visitors, glass bottled Orange Crush, IBC Root Beer, Mountain Dew and Coke. Missing one shelf if anyone has one laying around, give me a shout. What do you guys think of the green LED's behind rack and neon under machine ? May move the neon inside behind grill.
Decals not in yet.

Looks great, thanks for all the progress photos, always fun to watch others projects...also easier on the hands and budget!

I'd have to see that bottom neon behind the grill, I think it would look good but I can't tell.  It's always tough to photograph as well, to really show how it looks.

That last photo of the Peter Max sign is cool, that really is a great marquee.

Hey,,Appreciate it. This is only my second machine. Frist was a Vendo 23. Like the square tops much better. Decals should be in next week. Think I may go back with the same side stickers that were on it,,the solid red with white 7Up.

Is cheaper to watch and do it often but get to the point I can't take it any longer and have to restore something.LOL

Well,,Alan did a great job on enlarging the Peter Max side stickers. The ones I sent him were only about 6.5" tall and about 5.5" wide. He made these about 10" tall and 9.5" wide.  This one is done,,,,,,,,,,,I think.lol

I never posted any inside shots so thought someone might be interested in seeing it completed. Also have had no GFI issues since changing out breaker and installing GFI's in bathroom.
Got the top shelf in today from Ken (kbareit ) and he out did himself,,perfect,,now painted and installed and racked with my home made Scuppernong wine capped in old Olympia Beer bottles.

Thanks,,really enjoyed doing this one unlike the Vendo 23 before. Looking at a VMC 27 but no drum so may pass unless I can get it at a good price and from what I hear, around 300 max without drum and good luck on finding a drum a few have said.

That's cool.  I've got my SelVend in primer...soon to paint and reassemble.  Eric @ global compressors has my cooling unit.  Looking forward to getting it back and getting it all back together.

In my offtime (of which there is none) I'm going to mount my Duncan model 60 parking meter by my driveway.

I really didn't need another hobby but sure am glad I found this site.

Cheers,
