I am a novice on 81's so need some thoughts on value.  I was told original but they added a tap on the refrigeration system to add freon.  Looks like a lot more than that to me!

At this point, don't worry about the cooling yet.....use it as a bargaining tool.

That looks like a real nice original, the top of the collector list.

If you can get that machine for less than $2000.00 you will never be sorry!

I agree. The 81 is such a nice appealing machine and convenient for various size bottle distribution. Looking at the pictures, I'd say it's a great machine. The B and D in the 81's seem to do the best in sales, but solid red A's are still attractive and desirable.  Good luck!

So I did not end up getting it.  It was in an auction a few hours from my house with very little other soda related items so I thought I might get it for a deal.  Unfortunately though between not being able to attend in person or by phone and only having $1200 to spend I still knew it would be a long shot.  As it turned out it only went for $1250, but then you know how auctions go as that does not mean that was the other persons limit.   Oh well, I will keep hunting......

  $1250 is a steal for an 81B.

That's too bad, auctions are a fickle beast!  Was it in NC?  I would have had a tough time passing it up at that price, but like you said, who knows what the bidder(s) would have gone up to.

Yep, patience is a virtue.   Tom, yes this was in NC...it was in Clemmons, NC just outside of Winston.

Several years ago my Father retired from his construction business and brought in an auctioneer to sell off his equipment.

Rather than set a reserve price, the auctioneer asked me to bid up any item that had not reached that goal. (Shill bidding)

Needless to say, I bought a lot of heavy equipment that day!  biggrin

That's too bad, I'm about an hour away from there, not that I'm in the market for an 81, but I'll buy them at that price all day!
