Title: A funny thing happened while on my way to lunch...
Post by: timsmore on January 23, 2006, 09:16:41 pm
My wife and I were out and about a few days ago and I laughed as I went past a tire place when I saw this machine.  "Man is that big and ugly" I said.  Well it's mine now.  I couldn't help but stop and ask about it.  Kinda looked left out and lonely.  The owner of the shop told me it was vending for free and it stopped about a year and a half ago.  Well of course the local vending guy took care of him and gave him a newer model (see behind this one on the wall.  This poor thing was sitting in the parking lot just waiting to get crushed.  Well being a former Army recruiter I know the answer is always "NO" if you don't ask.  SO I did ask if he was doing anything with it and he said "no, do you want it?"  I should have said NO but free is free.  He also gave me a new lock for the one that he had lost the key to and not replaced.  Once I drilled it out I had my wife ready with the camera.  You know the whole Al Capone thing with Geraldo.  Anyway it was just about as exciting but to my surprise the new lock fit like a glove and the inside is very clean.  Besides it being "Ugly and Dirty" with Arizona grit, I have no complaints at all.  According to the stickers it will dispense cans or bottles.  I hope for some input from all of you on that set up.  Here are a couple pics.  Also I had it tipped on its side to get it home for about 45 minutes.  I plugged it in long to hear power up and also for some reason the lights work!  Then I unplugged.  How long before I can plug it in and check the temperature safely with regards to the condensor and other parts?  You know, the way this is going, this might turn out to be a "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" prize in the rough just looking for some attention.

I have determined it is a Choice Vend CVC-223.  ANy help is appreciated.  And yes the pages are straight on the manual I bought so I can now easily scan the 1000 pages.

OK, How do I post the pics?  I just waited a couple minutes and was only able to try to insert two of them!!!

Nice looking machine! Glad it was saved from a fate of being a tire stand. You can only post two pictures at once. I avoid the "preview post" when posting pics. Removes the links on my computers.
Had a chance to come up with a price for all of the manuals on CD?
Thanks!

maybe these will work...THe panels on the side are some sort of re-fit.  Looks like the true history may be underneath.  DOes anyone know before I start removing pop rivits?

and still...this is the Capone moment.  The guy at the shop laughed when I told him that any mice or hamsters I found would have to be returned so that they wouldn't starve.  Luckily nothing of the sort not even a Scorpian.

Check out what I think is the number vended!!!  How do I load bottles and cans.  There is a sticker that very briefly explains.  The whole screw thing has me worried.  ALso how long before I can leave it plugged in since it was on its side for about an hour?

Thanks everyone ahead of time.

Last one...  What's with the two boxes?  I understand the coin mechanism and boy does it need cleaned.  The guy thought it was set on free but the coin return was stuck open from not releasing from the outside lever being depressed.

Great machine. The box on the left is a relay box which includes manual reset circuit breakers to protect the vend motors. The box on the right is the coin mechanism. As for loading cans it should load two columns at a time, one column lined up behind the other. The far right section will vend four colums of the same flavor. When you vend a can it will alternate front to back. If you already plugged it in, then you may as well go ahead and plug it back in.

It was litterally just about 10 seconds only when I plugged it in.  Still OK or wait?

Thanks,

It should be fine, because if it was going to cause any damage it would have done it in those ten seconds.

I would say wait. I always wait 24 hours. It isn't worth destroying a cooling system to save a few hours.

I wonder what Kito would say about tires leaning against the machine?

Would it have been dramatic when it blew or a quiet fade to darkness and then just not get cold?  I waited about 3 hours before I juiced it with electricity.

Thanks again everyone.

I'm waiting... Would there have been any drama or just stop cooling?  I started taken aprt the groovy plastic covers.  What a mess.  This Arizona dust/dirt/sand gets into everything and is just falling from every nook and cranny.

What could have really happened? It was on it's side 45min., up right 3hrs. Guess with a large quanity of oil it could have knocked out the low-side valve. Has anyone ever had it to happen. Small low torque compressor would probably pull locked rotor and go out on overload first. What you say Eric? Ever destroyed one?

I noticed the talk about grime.

My 224 has the same problem. The coin mech was just jammed to inoperability with red clay dirt and bug and/or larva carcasses. I think at one time the mud wasps liked the machine. Anyway it was covered in a layer of filth on the outside when I got it. I went with Mean Green **WARNING: this stuff is NOT meant to be used on painted surfaces** and got most of the grime (and some of the old white paint) off of the outside of it. The inside was even worse. Still haven't got it clean yet.

You found my Choice Vends long lost red brother. I think they are related.

I can help with information since I just got mine up & running.

Hey

I am using mine here at work to bring in money to help pay for my coke machine hobby. I am amazed at the number of soda's I sell everyday. At least with this CV I dont have to refill it everyday like the V-63 can machine.

I've popped a compressor in the first 15 seconds before.
It started out with a loud clicking or cladder, then you could hear the compressor start to  run smooth but it wouldn't cool, this usually means a valve is now gone, or the compressor labors hard and then will lock up.

Depending on the ambient temperature of where the unit is, ideally 70 deg. F. the oil in the compressor should drain back to the sump or bottom of the compressorin in a couple of hours.  A lot of people do like to wait 24 hours to restart to be safe.

Well I am happy to say that it still cools.  I had it on for about 15 minutes and seeing that it was empty it was still cooling.  Now for the work the inside looks great but just needs a good vacuum and for the main dust part and a good cleaner to get it back.  As you can see the outside has been covered I believe at some point to help update the look what seems to be by the company at some time.  I pulled the plexi glass Pepsi skins off both sides and the front.  I'm trying to be positive in the fact that I have a blank canvess now that I can paint and then add images and put new plexi-glass over it.  THe hardware is there to hold the glass in place.  Problem I have inside is one of the spindles/columns keeps spinning.  I unplugged a connector and the light and the spindle switched off.  Any troubleshooting help for this is appreciated.  It was the second column.  Also recommendations on where to get a new background or image ideas will be nice.  Is it possible to have cans and bottles at the same time in different columns?  I was thinking two types of bottle beer and then cans and do up the outside reflecting that.  Also thinking on Kinkos for big printed images that can be covered then by the plexi.

Kevin any help is appreciated seeing that you may be the expert.  At least i can see what the color started as.

Tim - I don't have one of these machines but I'm pretty sure each column has it's own set of switches and relays.  Sounds to me like one of your relays has gone belly up and has fused closed.

It could be the vend limit switch, it should release the vend relay. If not it could be faulty or gummed up with syrup. They can be washed in warm water, dried and re-used if necessary. The switches are in the vending base with the vend motors and gear assembly. Tecumseh states, that if you lay a unit over with a compressor in it, stand it back up as long as you had it laid over and it should be fine. Thats from the horses mouth.

Thanks  I have started tearing this down.  Good thing being in AZ the inside is in great shape except for the spinning auger.  I took out the insides and wiped everything down.  The fans were a bit gummy so i cleaned them and lubricated.  It was good to see them spin when I plugged it back in. (You always wonder after you tear something apart)  GREAT air flow and even from both.  As for the spinning.  What should I try exactly with the spinning to get it to stop.  I have the entire unit sitting on the floor right now in the garage.  As for the outside. WHEW it's amazing what Arizona heat does to it.  I'm looking for a theme and Im going to do up the sides and put fresh plexi glass back on to cover it up and protect it.  As for the push button plastic selectors.  Is it possible to somehow wet sand or something to get the scratches off the surface so the selection labels can be seen clearly?  Thanks All!!!

Try to ohm out the vend relay on the offending column. There should be a normally open and a normally closed set of contacts. Be sure they are not sticking. Ohm one of the relays that is working right, then ohm the one that is questionable to see if it is doing something it shouldn't. As for the selection buttons. I have seen in Car Craft where they sanded taillght lens with 1500 grit sand paper then clear coated them. That may be a good idea.

Good idea with the sandpaper and clear coat.  I took out the insides and cleaned everything.  I noticed that the one switch is the only one not to "click" when depressed and release.  I gave it the once over pushing and pulling for a while still no clicking.  I reassembled and plugged it in and no spinning.  May be for the time being.  I think if anything a new switch is due.  I'm going to set this machine to do both bottles and cans.  Still taking ideas on the design of the outside.  I figure this is right at 6'6" tall.

THe inside went very easy.  I put a quick coat of the Hammertone Silver on the inside bottom just to seal it.  Had to sand a bit first but it came out well

OK, I have an issue...

I plugged the machine in to make sure everything sounded good and it cooled.  Great news is it cooled and lit up.  Bad news when I came back out the light was out ands the two fans in the back were not spinning but nice and cool.  Any help is appreciated   :darn:

Did it trip a breaker or something? Was there any power to anything? Not much to guess upon. Surely the fan motors and lights didn't just die at the same time.

Hello

Those two upper fans should run all the time. It is such a paint to get to them I would replace them while you have it apart.

Hello

I was thinking about this situation. You have an electrical problem & I would check down at the wiring harness. There is a seperate plug on the side of the wiring harness for the parts of the machine that need power all the time (lights, vending, evap fans etc). This plug may be loose or somehow electrical power feed has been monkeyed with.

Kevin sounds like you are having fun with your CV also.  I have an intermittant light/fan issue.  When I plug the machine in the outside light and two inside fans work.  After about 10-15 minutes they switch off.  The inside is cooling fine though.  Any thoughts?  I would think if there were loose wired this would be even more intermittant.  If I unplug for a couple hours they will once again light and spin for about 15 minutes.  Is there some type of sensor that may be wired in with the thermostat or something else that would cycle electricity like this.  I only say thermostat because it may have switched off the two fans and light when it reached temprature selected.  Only problem is they never switch back on and I can't see any way that they would be wired together.  :darn:

I think you need a new wiring harness. It is an easy change & would give you a one less thing to worry about.

Well I tried something simple first.  The plug that is inside the bottom by the motor is just to the right side.  THe two plugs that go there control the motor/compressor and the two interior fans,  My novel idea was to swap the plugs around and see what happened. I figured worse case the fans and light would keep spinning and the cooling would stop.  I'm happy to report that after two days the lights are still working along with the interior fans and also it is still cooling.  Go Figure.  Not sure why but not complaining either.   :drinkers:
