Author Topic: Thinking about parting out  (Read 4222 times)

After 3 years of walking around a CAV 51 and a VMC 27...I have almost decided to part them out.

The Cav 51 has some sentimental value...but has rust really bad, the whole bottom of one side of the machine is gone.  The ammo belt, main door, coin door etc is all in good shape.  Has anyone had any luck parting out a Cav 51.

The VMC 27 is pretty solid or it seems with the exception of the top section area where the chrome strip go across...it is so rusty the chrome has fallen off.  I need the drum for another 27, but the doors etc are all in good shape.  Again, what is the market for parting these out?

Jeff,
I parted out a Cav51 a few years ago and got about $650 total with about $400 for the belt alone. Since then I sold a complete restorable 51 for $550. Not an extremely desirable machine since it only vends the small bottles.
The 27 again is not an extremely desirable machine and the drum is the most valuable part. A drum recently sold on eBay for about $250. The doors will get you about $150 depending on the bidding and the coin mech maybe $100.
So - all in all - all parts will get you at least $600 each machine, but you never know with eBay - you might get two people who REALLY need that part.

If the 51 has some sentimental value you should be looking for a prts machine to replace the cabnet. 51's missing parts are on ebay all of the time. What sentimental value does it hold for you? Has it been in the family for a long time or something?

The 51 was actually in the Fire Dept. I started out in.  I didn't know it at the time I bought it.  However in 2004, I was putting together a presentation on the history of the department and ran across a newspaper clipping from the late 60's that showed a Cav 51 over against a wall.  I went back to the place I bought the 51 from and the guy I bought it from said he had found it in a building the fire dept. used to use for storage.  It was in the building with lots of old hose, boots gear etc...so I am pretty sure it was the one.

I have another complete and working 51...and I am not really sure I need 2 of them.  I had planned to repair the shell...then I decided I would buy another shell...I just don't know that I want to deal with swapping the guts out. The Cav 51 refrigerations look like of a pain.

BrianB has a complete cabinet for a 51 he is trying to sell you migt want to PM him about this.

With all these 51's, someone could re-create the 102  '<img'>

        This cabinet measures 18 3/4" from door to door and houses 2 ammo belts back to back.  What is the standard C-51 cabinet depth anyone?

Is that the one in your shop?? Its a mighty fine machine.
I know one came a while ago on Ebay but how many were actually made??

I'm suprised the machine wasn't fitted with a 10c coin mech on the colored side and a 5c one on the white side.

Jeff swap some parts from that rough 51 (Belt and/or bottle door that all those
firemen pulled a bottle through) to you good 51 that way you would still have some
of that machine and part out the rest.

Like Mcarter said, I do have 51 shell I'm looking to get rid of. The body itself is really straight and all beltline rust has been taken care of. It just has a little bit in the compressor comp. but it's all surface and would come off with ease.
