Title: Value for Pepsi Choice Vend CV-102 2 flavor 1950's
Post by: jrl on October 11, 2013, 04:16:08 pm
Just picked this up and I am now having it restored.  Any ideas as to the value?
Has all parts except door handle.
Looking for the missing handle too if you know where I can find a replacement.

Thanks!

welcome to the board and congrats!
Is this your first machine?

As for the handle, maybe others can chime in, but I don't think it's as easy as say a vendo 81 door handle... but I'm sure one can be found.

(Rick Restorations son found parts for his machine under a table at a My little Pony swap meet)

Yes.  It is my first machine.  I wanted something a little different and found it on CL.  I hope to find the missing handle.
I found 1950's Pepsi and Mountain Dew caps lodged in it.  Neat.

Welcome to the forum.

My first machine was also a Choice Vend. It was a much later square-top 5 selection, I don't think any of the parts are interchangeable.

Does your machine have metal helixes or augers in the bottom?

Hello!  The compressor, condenser etc is bolted in the center of the unit.  This attaches to a frame with two metal posts running on the underside of where the motor unit is. The back has an open space to allow the unit to vent.  It does not have an open front bottom space for ventilation but is enclosed.

Welcome to the site & the Choice Vend owners "club"

PS there is no "door handle" the round trim piece is actually were the door lock cylinder goes, it is similar to the side loading door lock on an Ideal slider, ( except it's round not oblong)

FYI...your picture is of a single vend CV72, not the dual vend CV102, I know "cause I own one ( CV72) although it does use the same dual control relay box inside.  The dual vending version had the star-burst lock eustachian (trim)  plate, while the single used this round style trim for the door lock. Plus your pictured machine has no selection buttons for either vending selection.

Thanks for correcting me.  And,  I am glad to be in the Choice Vend Club!
Was there ever any decals like the one on the side of your CV on the front?
I am trying to figure out if I should leave it "blank"  on the front or add a decal to represent the brands.

The machine has the original Manufacture Tag and it is listed as a:
Model Number CV102
Serial Number B 3271

I can send a photo if necessary.  I am positive that the body is a CV-102.  Perhaps the changer was changed out sometime over the years.

As I said in the prior post. both models used the same chassis, the difference being the front door trim, & selection buttons & the associated wiring harness, so in theory you could take a single & "pop" a dual front door onto the rear chassis & it would become a dual vendor.

Someone asked earlier in the thread if it has an auger style vending system like the late models, they do, however hey are cast zinc, not plastic, and they are not interchangeable between the late vs earlier styles.

Interestingly the single vendor is less common ( I hate the misleading word "Rare" in this hobby) than the dual, but not a desirable. they are both stunning machines when restored & all of the trim polished up against a nice dark Pepsi Blue & the sporty white strips that are still showing on your machine.

Mine had a large Pepsi cap water release decal on the front & you can still see teh outline of where it was located, but it just flaked away to dust.

Choice Vend liked those augers. Must have been their solution to babying glass bottles out of the machine. Could these early ones vend cans?

Are the relays inside the dual relay box the same ones they used later in the 5 box?

PS... I do have a replacement Pepsi light up cap for the front of mine, no point in hanging it onto the machine until I decide to restore it.

Note: it's the same size as an S/V (Select-Vend) Pepsi machine of the same era, while S/V's are far much more common to find that these C/V's ( I luv the acronyms)  :tounge:

Yes indeed , this model will vend cans! And the internal "guts" AKA the relays themselves will work from a late machine to an early machine, but prepare to do some soldering.

What about the individual relays? Are they interchangeable with later ones?

EDIT: Sorry, I see now.

I kind of thought the "Choice Vend" branding meant you could choose to vend cans or bottles with their machines. There are very few round tops designed to vend cans.

Hi.  Thanks everyone for educating me on this machine.  The machine is a CV-102.  I have the Tag and Serial Number.  SO,  it appears that the vending portion has been changed out over time for the single dispensing unit but the body is identified as a CV-102.

Thanks

That is a nice machine for your first one. Congrats and welcome! I always liked the look of the the plastic lens on top of many brands of Pepsi machines.

Here is an interesting Choice Vend magazine advertising ad I just found from 1957 listing the models of Choice Vend.
You can see the models available and also how many flavors each machine dispensed.  It is interesting that this ad does not mention a two flavor CV-102,  but list the CV-112 as a two flavor model.  This leads me to believe the model was discontinued prior to 1957 or the Cv-102 was just a larger bottle holding unit of the CV-72.

Thanks and I hope everyone is doing well.

Wow, that looks sharp!  The people of South Windsor, CT would be proud (where Choice-Vend existed)...I grew up a couple of towns over, great hockey rivalry.

Hi!  Thanks for all the nice comments on this machine.

Is there any secret to opening one of these machines without drilling out the front mechanism?

Many old machines need a 3/8" allen wrench to get the door to latch.
