Dole

Howdy all,
I just recieved a Dole Coke dispenser (the type that looks like an outboard motor with a chrome rotary valve handle).  It's relatively complete and very straight but appears to have been sitting around a junk yard for several years.  It's needing a drip tray, the Coke emblem for the front, a new set of gaskets, a paint job and some serious cleaning.  Plus I'm looking for a manual or perhaps someone who can tell me how to dissasemble the valve and interior parts for cleaning and paint prep.  

So far I can figure out how to remove the plastic insert from the outlet but I'm stuck on how to get the stainless syrup holder and the metal plate in the bottom of the main body cavity out.  It wiggles in place but that's as far as I'm wanting to go with it until I can figure out if I'm doing it right.  There is a red ring around the outlet with two holes that looks like a spanner wrench might fit to loosen but I'm not sure.

I have never owned one of these things.  I tend to stick to upright round corner machines.  Is this thing meant to mix the syrup with carbonated water or is it just a syrup dispenser only?

If anybody has any of the parts I need I'd be happy to trade for an enameled eblem that I have from a coke multiplex dispenser.  It's the rectangular art deco style enameled one in nice shape but has some slight bending around the rivet holes.

That really is a cool website.  I wish mine could look as good as his NOS Dole dispenser.

The guy I got it from bought it in an auction but I didn't ask any more questions.  Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what one of these goes for in restored condition?  I'd really rather not put more into this than it's worth.  I'm figuring a paint job will suffice.

 Post a few pictures if you can so I can see what yours needs. I do have the installation instructions that came with the Dole Deluxe dispenser that I could email to you. It might have what you are looking for on the disassembly. As for parts they can be hard to come by I do know another collector that keep extra parts around and he might have what you need.

After you got that plastic insert piece out (From looking from the bottom) and the rest of the
bolts/seals from where the soda dispenses out. I don't think there's anything else it should just lift out my did.... and CLR does wonders for cleaning the lime/calcium build up from the inside. And yes..... RacerX45 here will have the info you need!

Sorry for the delay.  Been a busy week.  Just got a new (1948) Mills Jukebox.  It's been a thing of great wonderment and has kept me away from my computer.  Here's some pics of the Dole dispenser.  The first shows the general condition.  It's really rough looking but fairly straight and solid with a bit of surface rust.

Here's a photo of the base.  It's missing the drip tray.  Anybody got one?

Here's the assembly from the inside that I finally got out of the box.  It was really stuck.

Here's a pic of the underside of the valve assembly.  Is there something that's supposed to block the hole at the bottom of the syrup container?  It's currently an open hole and I think that the syrup isn't thick enough to hold itself above that hole without something to block it.  I'd love to get some info on this thing.  Thanks for all your help!

 Well all I can say is WOW. You really have your work cut out for you. So far it looks like you are missing the Coca-Cola emblem, syrup tank lid, drip tray and grate, valve nozzle, and plunger (goes inside syrup tank). As for replacing the rubber no one I know has ever wanted to remove the rivets that hold it on to see if they could have a replacement made. I would say yours is a likely candidate to try and remove it to find out what it looks like off of the dispenser. Unless you think the rubber could be cleaned and restored with vinyl die, I would say it wouldn’t hurt to remove it. Now I don’t know how you will reattach it as replacing flat rivets is a lost art, but if it is trashed (can’t see it in any pictures) well you’ll need to do something so… The other parts you need do come around, but I think your best bet is to find a rusted out complete dispenser for parts. As for a value on a restored Dole Deluxe well here are a few different price ranges. Complete parts dispensers $200 to $400 depending on if they are restorable, Clean (displayable) originals $600 to $850, restored and very nice originals $900 to $1200. My N.O.S. Deluxe I got for a steal (relatively speaking) and have had offers of over 2K but have passed on so that should give you an idea of value. Let me know if you have more questions,

I think a nice soak in CLR will do wonders for the side pieces... And RacerX45 is right...
Your in need of quite a few hard to find parts... If the body is solid (and the outside does)
You may just want to paint it and the lid, clean the rest the best you can and display as is.
Parts will come along but can be costly and take a while but you never know someone could have one rusted out putting it on eBay as I'm typing this.

Removing those rivits...... Man I don't think I would.... You'd never get it back to the way
it is now.... With the nozzle removed and the base removed you may just be able
to submerge the body in something that would flush/dissolve/remove the inside rust without
taking the two main halfs apart..... Again RaceX45 may know a trick or two.
Actually I'd like to know myself... I have this same model and it sounds like there's sand? in it
removing the base and nozzle would get that out and while I have it apart I'd like to undercoat or “inner” coat it when I restore it.

Yeah, I think you guys are right.  This may be best left a display piece only.  I'll keep looking for the parts or a rust bucket to cannibalize.  Actually when I cleaned out the insulation, my friend who's a Horticulturist (plant expert) immediately identified the material inside as "fine vermiculite", a mineral commonly available at garden supply stores used to mix into potting soil.

 Here is a view of the Dole Deluxe syrup tank and cold plate assembly. It looks like you are missing everything below the plastic ring (marked 16 in the illustration). The nozzle is plastic, but the rest is metal.

The Deluxe (Having the Coke Logo on the back with chrome around it,turn
handle nozzle etc.) Just like this one in this thread ...It's the one making the sand sliding
around nose..... What do you do?.......

I have a rusted out Dole Super for parts.   Broken handle / bad emblem / no lid. good base.  Has nozzle  & all interior but not sure if they would be compatable

Unfortunately nothing on the Deluxe is the same as on the Super. Parts will fit, base, drip tray, but are not correct.

 I was hoping it was the Super as it would be easier to get in and remove the lose insulation.
 So first thing is getting the old stuff out. I haven’t taken mine apart far enough to see if there is away to get inside between the out shell and ice tank. I would think that there should be a fitting on at least one of the three holes in the bottom and you should be able to remove that to get access to the insulation. Once you are there I would use a shop-vac to clean it out. After that you could poor in a rust sealer, but I would be very careful to make sure it didn’t leak out and damage the paint or worse the plastic Coke emblem. Also I don’t know what the sealer might do to any remaining insulation so I would poor it on some that you removed to make sure it won’t make a big mess that would be hard to deal with inside the dispenser. Also check to make sure it won’t damage the rubber seal. So after all that you will need to decide if you want to replace the insulation. If it is just for display you don’t have to worry about keeping the ice cold, so you shouldn’t need it for that. I have noticed one other thing the insulation does though and that is sound damping. I have two multiplex dispensers one with insulation and without.  Every time someone wants to see how they work and I show them how to turn the handle and open the lid your hard a hollow tin sound on the dispenser without insulation. This drives me nuts. Getting the replacement insulation back in will be a real pain, but if you are like me it might be worth the effort. Let me know if you have more questions,

I would remove the emblem first (it just twist off)... Then finding a way to get to the insulation then removing what I hear, check for places that could allow leaks... and then pouring CLR into it and let it set for a few hours, drain that, then pour what your talking about some type of rust nutralizer/sealer into it, let that dry then maybe a spray insulation foam?...

Just would hate to restore then someday find a weak spot that would rust when I could have prevented it.
