Hi GP,
I think it is a VMC. Interesting that the coke sign is raised. Wonder what is under that.
With any luck here is the link:

If you look close, the coke sign is screwed on , or riveted. I would think if it was a generic model, they could have laid down a new decal.
My luck it's a 7up or RC, ah. to dream, now if I can hit the lottery to make a run on it

The 7up logo would be much taller, this sign wouldn't cover it.
Same for the RC letters. And we know it's not Coke cause of the VMC
dimple just barely visible in the first picture, and the VMC coin entry & bottle door.
That narrows it down to Dr.Pepper/ generic or Pepsi. Looking at the third
picture, the door linner has a hole in it and some insulation missing, looks
to be exposing the original color.

       Thanks for sharing Ginger.

Nice catch Glenn.. If it is a Pepsi, the sign doesn't like it would cover the embossing either... Look at the pic in the header of this site.. the "P" extends almost to the 2nd bottle gate. The sign doesn't come down that far on the auction...

Third and fourth photos reveal blue paint...
The third image is an excellent reference for matching the blue as this is the round corner re-enforcement brace. You can see this due to the hole in the liner. The bolt head on the hinge has also revealed some blue paint.
This still doesn't explain the raised Coca-Cola plate possibly not being large enough to conceal the Pepsi logo... Perhaps it's just large enough...

Nice catch Ginger!
I saw this listing earlier today, but did not pay much attention to it.

I think that is just the bezel gasket; nevertheless, it appears it was a Pepsi machine at one time.
But look where the ID plate is.

Guys,

many thx for all your info!!!

this board resembles more an episode of CSI on this topic

so in conclusion,

its a VMC 81 of some description currently painted red with a raised coke sign

[ii] originally could have been generic [non embossed]

[iii] possibly embossed pepsi [but was pepsi embossing slightly larger than coke sign]

[iv] NOT 7up or RC embossed as embossing just too big for coke sign placed above it.

what would the respective value difference between

a generic VMC as opposed to embossed Pepsi VMC in this condition.

Finally, moondawg originally also mentioned DP [firstly, were these embossed also]
I have discounted this option above, maybe rightly or wrongly,

the guy has responded to my question so would be interested in your opinion on
values.

many thx

well the guy responded saying his reserve was $2500,

but he would let the auction run with no BUYITNOW,

so I was less interested, by the time its shipped to UK

with duty and shipping it is not really an option unless

maybe 7up [or RC!]. If his buyitnow had been $1500 or

so, then it would have certaintly been worth a punt.

anyway, he's now updated his listing

saying that the machine is a vmc 81,
one of only x4 models & worth $9500
to $17,000 USD, so hes fully aware!!

lets see what it goes for!

Interesting! I would've bet that it was a generic - the plate just barely covered that logo.

The VMC generic 81' s that were bought by Dr. Pepper were not emobssed. They had round porcelain signs on all three sides. Some now are being restoed with a rectangle porcelain sign on its front-the way Jeff Walters has it in his 3rd edition book, but it is wrong. Orginial rectangle signs are much easier to find and less expensive than round, thus making it the restorers 1st choice. This machine is not far from me, so I have been watching it also. GP- if you are out, I may go for it.

I have personally seen a generic DP with the rectangular sign. Unrestored and original, When the sign was pulled you could tell it has been there for years. This was 5 or 6 years ago. Either sign could be used and be correct.

I agree!
My generic 81 has been repainted once as far as I can tell. It originally had a 17" x 6.5" rectangular sign, which I won the other day biggrin and round 10-2-4 decals on the side and had been replaced with a smaller rectangular 'chevron' logo sign and matching 'Dancing P' bottle cap decals.

My all original DP 110 has round signs on the sides and a large 10-2-4 decal on the front.

I have two DP vmc 81's that are both still unrestored. One had a round decal on the front and when I removed it, there were screw holes that would fit a round sign. The other one had a rectangular DP sign. I took it off and there were the same holes, in the same place as the other, that would fit a round sign. Joey and Tom, maybe you are right-they could have been done either way. I don't know, but when I put the orginial round and rectangular sign on the front of each to compare, the rectangular sign seems to big (long) for the front? Take a look at Jeff Walters book (page 234), you will see what I mean. Maybe there is a smaller rectangular one. that went on the vmc 81. Tom, congrats on your new sign. I watched that one on ebay, but am looking for another orginial round one. Attached is one of my vmc DP 81's. The one with decal (before removal).

hi,

i will not be bidding, it will go to high as I have to consider
shipping and duty on top of the auction price. if i had been
able to agree a price offebay when i first emailed him then
i would have bought it and took a risk, embossed or not,
but his price would have to have been right, ie just a very
good price for a generic vmc 81, then if it wasnt an embossed
I could just have sold it on in th US and if embossed, either
shipped it or traded it for arestored and then ship the restored

so best of luck everyone,

it will be a good and rare machine whoever gets it.

Bubba,
If you read back to the first page of this thread, GP states that the seller emailed her that his reserve is $2500. I think it is the first listing - don't remember seeing it before.
