It goes behind those links that allow the gate to open. The spring in there as it connected to a coat hanger that goes up the whole length of the link system. Does the spring not connect to the top? Thought it might since the coat hanger does

Is this the spring you are looking for?  If so, it does not connect to the top of the stack.  It connects to a nib sticking out of the stack body.  It is a little hard to see but the pic is the best one I have that shows it.
