Those Who Stay Will be Champions!

« on: November 09, 2008, 08:22:08 pm »

A friend sent this link to me as he knows that I am a big car nut.  Funny thing--I must be a real SMC nut as well because I found myself looking at some of the machines and memorabilia in the background instead of the cars!

This guy must have some big bucks because I have been very involved in the Unlimited Hydroplane scene for the last 20 years and those Miss Bud hulls and trailers did not come cheap!

Enjoy!

What's that they say. He who dies with the most toys wins. What a collection.

Some people invest in gold or diamonds. This guy has a good grip on valuables.
Sure wish he was my rich uncle.  biggrin
But just one '57 Vette would make me happy forever.  happydrinkers

I love old cars and old memorabilia. And I too find myself looking more at the background then the actual cars when there any old coke or gas stuff to look at.

I will need to save some of these photos to my favorites.

I have been fortunate enough to see the Miss Bud (many different versions) driven by several of the greats of the sport on the Detroit River including Dean Chenoweth, Tommy D'Eath, Chip Hanauer, Jimmy Kropfeld, Dave Villwock, Ron Snyder and Scott Pierce but none was more exciting than when Mike Hanson took over for Chip Hanauer in 1994.  In an early heat race--or perhaps time trials, the escape hatch came out of the bottom of the boat and Hanauer was injured by the rush of water that hit his lower back and crotch--OUCH!

Hanson stepped into the boat and in one of the heat races he slid the boat wide out of the Roostertail turn and narrowly missed the corner of the seawall at the Waterworks Park Grandstand.  By my videotape I would say that he missed the wall by less than 5 feet.  People 20 rows into the grandstand were drenched by the wave.  I can't tell you if he eventually won the race that year but it was one of the most exciting and best saves I have ever seen in more than 35 years of following the unlimited's.

If you ever get a chance to see these boats--DO IT!  You will never see anything else that compares to it.  Unfortunately, the sport is probably not going to be around in its current form much longer due to the high cost to compete.

I am glad to see that someone has a Miss Bud hull in their collection.  I had the opportunity to meet Bernie Little on several occasions and he was a giant in the sport.  And if you want to talk about a guy with a lot of toys--he had them all!

Hard to beleive this is a private collection. I often wonder how these collections are possible? I cant imagine how much $ it took to put that all together. :jawdrop:and :jawdrop:and jawdrop
